Well we went out to count birds, and were missing 1 Guinea so we went out looking...

we found her on a nest containing 49 Eggs!!!

anyone need coral blues? how many should we put in the incubator (DO NOT TELL KRIS I ASKED!)

Put all but the dirty one on the very bottom and candle at 10 days removing the ones that look bad. You would be surprised how many will be developing! I have hatched a lot of guinea keets this way and I am surprised every time.

They are all very clean. but Kris will KILL me if I put them in the Incubator

They ALL share the same nest/s they will also share sitting duties, and watch out for the babies, even the boys get in on the action around here.

Hi All!  My DD and I have been reading here for a while and she is in love with the silkies!  But I could use some more info.
1 - Am guessing they do OK here in SC since you all have them, but are there any special considerations they need?
2 - We have about a dozen full size layers and a roo, will a silkie do OK with that? There is a 9x6 coop attached to a 50x50 run.
3 - Do we "need" more than 1?  She is kinda looking for a pet chicken.  They are all pets, but some like to be petted more than others. 
Thanks in advance.  Any advice would be helpful in our future flock plans!

 

Silkies are great SC residents. But they can also be problem children too. They are prone to mites and or lice. It can be a constant battle. I do not recommend free ranging bc the fluffy crests can obstruct their sight. If silkies are being kept separate from the other birds, I'd recommend you have more than one, as chickens are very social. Can they be kept with your other birds? I'm not sure, as it depends on the temperament of your other birds. Silkies have "soft spots" on their heads. If they are pecked in the head it's not good. You have a large run, but your coop is rather small in relation. Not sure how many birds you have? I love my silkies. It's the only breed I have/raise
