South Dakota here

I'm here too! My hometown is Huron but I live in Wessington Springs now. ~Love~ it here.

I don't have any chickens at the moment but I'm getting a pair of Mille Fleur Cochins next week!

Up to 3 white cochins and 2 dozen mixed eggs in the incubator

That's awesome. Are they full sized cochins or bantam? I've been entertaining the idea of incubating. I have a source for some turkey eggs and have been considering incubating quail eggs. Not sure yet if I want to dive into it this year. I have quite a few new birds coming to my place without fussing with an incubator this year.

I know I am kind of late to the party here, but I am in Sioux Falls. I don't have chickens yet, but they are on order (4 started pullets; 2 barred rock and 2 easter eggers) and should get here in May. I have been wanting chickens pretty much all my life, and when I found out (last year) that Sioux Falls allows them in city limits I started doing research. It took me awhile to talk my husband around to the idea, but he is humoring me. The kids thought I had lost my mind, but they are coming around.

Now my mother is insisting that we need a duck, but I think I will need another year to talk my husband into it.

I love my ducks! Their eggs are fabulous. Mind you I keep the duck hens in a "chicken tractor" so its not like I have to have a large coop for them. They aren't needing to roost, so my little tractor works well. I have it so I can put old storm window panes onto its wire cage area, for winterization. That makes it so all winter they can go into the "sunroom" and sun themselves and stay out of the snow. I fill it with straw slowly through the winter months so that they are up out of the mess and in return they are composting me a nice little area in my flower bed! I always move their tractor to the south side of the house, in my flower bed after the flowers have died back for winter. Makes them my winter gardeners as their dropping will be the spring fertilizer. They don't get to dig up anything since the ground is frozen by the time the tractor is put there. Works out great for me! As spring begins I move the tractor to its spring/summer locations and so I am able to have best of both worlds. In my opinion.

Ducks are also great at letting you know if something has come into your yard. They will quack if someone comes into the yard, or a dog, etc. So I know immediately if something is amiss. My chickens wont make any such noise. So having a small number of ducks works for me.
