South Dakota Thread!

Always good to know fellow S.D. peeps!
How are your littles shaping up? Are my ex-pats behaving themselves? I hope they're laying for you. :fl

I hatched a group of homegrown mutts early this year and the four pullets (all black) started laying, maybe three weeks ago? Two are laying lt brown, which I expected, but one is laying blue & one green. :love Pleasant, fun surprise.

I grew up and still live in South Dakota!! I grew up in the badlands (southern SD) yes on a reservation, I now live north almost to the ND border, I’ve raised chickens up here and they did fine during the winter time!! I had a pretty good sized coop but was pretty breezy!! I patched the best I could!! I did hang a heat lamp over their watered, didn’t always work the best but I tried!! However I moved away from there, still in the same area and just built a new coop for the babies I got this spring!! I’ll let you guys know how this coming winter works for us!! I’ve always had good luck during the winter time!

@R2elk digs a hole in his coop @ lines it with fresh manure (horse, cow, etc.)--about a foot thick, I think he said. The water bucket goes in the middle. It keeps his water liquid through the winter. My coops all have floors @ present, but one day I'm gonna find out how well this works for me.
