South Louisiana Temps Dropping & Chicken Owners

Just to let you know not to worry so much about the cold and your chickens. If bedding is nice and deep and I mean deep like 8 inches or more you should be fine. I have not used heat in my coop all winter. Roof is not sealed at edges either nor are the window cracks( windows are not glass just board). My coop is 8x8x8 with 22 chickens in it. They free range everyday no matter what the weather. Last pics on their blog shows them going out in snow. I have yet to see any frostbite at all. There perch is a branch about 2 1/2 inched diameter. I have chickens sleeping on the floor as well as on the perch. Bedding used is wood chips covered in straw. Chickens are very hardy try not to worry about a cold snap as long as it is above 0 your coop will be warmer than outside by at least 10 to 20 degrees more most likly more than that even.

...and even if you don't, it doesn't really matter! it's Louisiana... It'll never be cold enough to worry about. And if it does hit 22, it will be 88 and 115% humidity by 7am. Ask me how I know!

I dunno, it didn't get above freezing all day today. It's been spitting snow and sleet too. I about froze my booty off at work.

I wouldn't be counting on that 80 degree weather. I mean this is Arkansas we use the heat and a/c on the same day too ya know, but it just ain't happenin this week!

I'm glad the birds are cold hardy, coz I'm sure not!

This is the forecast where I live. The town is about 400 ft lower in elevation than my actual location, so the lows are generally lower than forecasted at my house:

Tonight Low 11
Monday High 31 low 10
Tuesday High 27 low 15
Wednesday High 37 low 21
Thursday High 40 low 19 with snow showers.

I've lived in much worse weather (Ohio, horrible weather, -25 with snow and ice and wind, ick), but good grief, this is GEORGIA, for crying out loud!
