Southern New ENgland 4-H Poultry Show

I just emailed the 4-H in our area for information. Oh, and thanks for the compliments on our silkies.

pam, if you can find a good club, i think this show is actually pretty good for the first time. it was the first one i ever went to! the study questions and answers are on the website, and you might want to take a look at them with your daughter. those silkies are beautiful, by the way

Last year they made people leave if they had no proof of testing, even sellers in the parking lot. They were watching out for it big time!

they're a whole lot stricter about testing than the northeastern poultry congress show, for sure! i was so surprised when they didn't even take out our birds to check them over at that show. the guy just glanced at them and told us to go right in! at uconn, they take out each bird and check it for mites and that the leg band is correct, and there are still people who get sent out every year!

Yep, my friend got kicked out for mites in her silkie. And the Northeastern Show didn't check mine either!!!!

that really stinks for your friend

we always dust ours for mites a few weeks before the show. actually, lately i've been using flea and tick dog shampoo when i wash my birds that works really well to get rid of mites. of course, my leghorn is like allergic to it or something so all her skin started peeling and she looked terrible for poultry congress and she's (usually) about perfect for her breed, too. murphy's law, i guess

the rest of the chickens were okay with it, tho. not that breed class is such a big thing at uconn, anyways.

What's everyone bringing? I'm bringing a standard bearded white polish (She's AWESOME, even though I got her from an auction) and a quail belgian bearded d'anver(She's alright)

my white leghorn, June, and a blue modern pullet named Juniper (she's not that good for her breed but she's so sweet!). my little sister's bringing a brown-red oegb even though she's not that good for her breed named ceena (it's pronounced see-na, my sister likes to make up names for her chickens

) and our cochin rooster named mallard. he's pretty good for his breed, too. we named him mallard cause he sounded like a duck when he was a chick

and then my sister's also bringing her serama, pamala, that she got at poultry congress. she has a crossed beak, but she's mostly for showmanship. hey, is anyone else entering eggs?

cbs, what's your polish's name? someone in my club has one named sauerkraut!

haha, that's a good name! i only have one polish, he's this crazy rooster who likes to hide his head in corners and when i gave him a bath a little while ago, he went totally limp... i thought he was dead! we got him when he was three weeks old at a swap and i swear he was a pullet then! looked just like one
roll.png
he's absolutly gorgeous now and almost* good for his breed; he's got a crooked toe. we have to give him away, though. we already have nine other roosters and five seperate coops and poor bree is living all alone right now since he fights with the other roosters
