TOMTE
Chicks from the Disc
Okay, I bought this. And I have always been terrible at math. Aliss is about 3lbs. How much do I give her? And how many times per day?

I am NOT an expert but everything I have read says not to give acetaminophen to chickens because of liver toxicity.Okay, I bought this. And I have always been terrible at math. Aliss is about 3lbs. How much do I give her? And how many times per day?

I was told to buy infant tylenol for her :OI am NOT an expert but everything I have read says not to give acetaminophen to chickens because of liver toxicity.
If you can’t get a vet to prescribe Metacam then aspirin or ibuprofen are ok to give.
Just did a bit of research and liver toxic at high doses (as for people) but lower doses OK.Okay, I bought this. And I have always been terrible at math. Aliss is about 3lbs. How much do I give her? And how many times per day?

Is that syringe really 59ml (which is what it implies on the package? What are the markings - meaning how accurately could you give a small amount? 10ml? Less?I was told to buy infant tylenol for her :O
I didn't want to get aspirin in case of internal injuries. I wish I'd known ibuprofen would be better, I dont have enough money to get ibuprofen instead... Although in a lot of threads in the emergency forum, people suggest infants tylenol for pain. So I dunnoIs that syringe really 59ml (which is what it implies on the package? What are the markings - meaning how accurately could you give a small amount? 10ml? Less?
Also, any chance you could get children's aspirin or ibuprofen instead. I think you will be OK giving a small amount of this - but it is pretty clear all sources say that an NSAID like ibuprofen or aspirin is safer for birds.
Can you link me to the posts that say infant Tylenol? I have only found ones that say don't give Tylenol!Okay, I bought this. And I have always been terrible at math. Aliss is about 3lbs. How much do I give her? And how many times per day?

Now I can't find the posts in search, can't remember which terms I used. I remember one by eggcessive where they said that they used to be against the use of tylenol for chickens but came across a couple studies that changed their mind. But now all I can find is stuff from @PonypoorCan you link me to the posts that say infant Tylenol? I have only found ones that say don't give Tylenol!
And do you understand why the package says 2FL OZ (59ml) when your picture shows a 5ml syringe? Is there anything else on the package to suggest what that is about?!
That said, I have found 2 legit scientific studies that give some indication of safe dose for a 3lb (=1.4kg) chicken.
I won't fuss with posting them but can do so if you want. They basically are reassuring that you wouldn't be endangering your hen with that product even if you gave her all of it (don't do that!).
I also found that our Fluffy Butt friend @Ponypoor has used infant Tylenol on her silkies and believes the dose is 10mg/kg. I don't have a source for that other than Pony - but real world experience is good so let's go with that!
At 10mg/kg you want to give your 1.4kg hen 14mg of the drug. I think Pony gives it twice a day.
With the product you have, that would be about 0.5ml (160mg in 5ml so 16mg in 0.5ml).
We are well in the safe zone based on the studies I found, so don't be too nervous.
Use your smaller syringe and give the 0.5ml which is conveniently the first marking on the syringe.
But as I said, we are well in the safe zone so don't worry if it goes a shade over or under.
Good luck!
@Ponypoor or @bgmathteach or anyone - do please check my math and my thinking here - I have never used this and am just trying to help out TOMTE.
