Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

hey everybody! Nice day here downstate. Watched my 4 little buggers being trained by momma on how to scratch for food today as I let them out the coopINTO A SMALL/CONTAIMNED RUN. ooos caps.....
In the 60s here and they were just fine hanging out w/momma till she made them go in the co[p at dark. Luv my chickens.
Had to ressit a pullet today at my feedstore. Nice dominique. No room here at the ionn unfortunately. But she'll find HOME FAST NO PROBLEM.

I just love chickens. I am one sick momma cause they really are my therapy.

Hey mags, it was a great day wasn't it? I had the little ones in the coop and out in the grass for a bit. 2 more weeks and they're going outside for good. In the meantime, I'm going to introduce them to the two old biddies. Tomorrow they'll be in the run while Gladys and Agatha free-range. Hopefully the big girls will notice them. I can't tell if they ignore them on purpose or are just clueless!

There was a guy who had posted on craigslist that he had BOs - eggs, day olds and 6 week olds. I asked him about a 6 week old, but he had just promised the last one. But he said he might be able to get a few extras hatched by a hen that's just gone broody. If so, he said 8 weeks.

He also breeds Golden Laced Wyandottes, as well as BAs, RIRs, NHRs and Pekin Ducks. Sent me a lot of info about the breeds.

Oh no!

I'm going to try to sneak up on the chicks in the brooder box. The other night I heard their little hen snores and it was soo cute!!

Hi all. I hope to hear from George soon, to see how his day went. We got to meet at the show yesterday.
It would be cool to meet you all, since we've become a "family".
I know that shows are so far away for most of us. It was only 120 miles for me. ONLY! Hah!
I know I have a great time meeting other chicken heads, and actually seeing and touching the supplies that we wonder about buying.
Plus, no shipping!
It is interesting seeing all the different breeds.
I got to sell some roosters, instead of having them eaten.
And my Clyde got best of breed in a very competitive class, Black Copper Marans.
His girl Bonnie got reserve of breed, and I will be in the Poultry Press! Big day for us!!

Sounds like you had a blast. I'd really like to check out one of the shows. And I'm sure Mr. "You're On Your Own" will be right there with me.

(Right now, I'm listening to him vacuum. Music to my ears. Think I'll go back to sleep!! )

I put the little chickies out in the coop today. The big girls are free-ranging. There was a lot of grumbling when they saw the three little interlopers in "their space", and Gladys has been especially bossy this morning (poor Agatha). But the babies are having a great time. They seem perfectly acclimated to the cold this morning - no huddling.

We spent the day (the whole day) doing more work on the coop. Here's the original coop:

and here's the finished product:

I hate the way it looks - may paint it so it hangs together more. But there's plenty of room and ventilation. I'm going to add a swing and ladder perches to the big area on the right side of the picture. And Bobby's going to cut an access door in the plywood on the back right side. Oh yeah, and run electric out. Then a sauna and big screen tv...

Hi, Roberta! It was great meeting you ... Congrats on the win! I wasn't sure whether folks would be posting in this thread, or the one for the Sussex County Show. I posted this over in that one yesterday afternoon:

Welcome, George!! We have a great thread going here. Some really nice people.

I had the pleasure of meeting Roberta last week. And yes, she has some of the most beautiful chickens!!!

Good luck with your new BRs. I have one, 4 weeks old. What other birds do you have in your flock? And how are the limits over in the Town of Islip? or is it Babylon? We're limited to 8 hens, no roosters here in Huntington. I plan to push it right to the limit. (and over Bobby's that's for sure!)

Love my chickens!!
