Thank you Suzanne, lots of beautiful squares to choose from.
I'm really enjoying doing simple sprouting with ball jars and cheese cloth....
I'm really sorry for all the problems with chicks. Please keep us posted.
We are having terrible luck with our new incubator. Our first hatch of bantam Polish was a flop and now our second hatch of Silkies and Nankins has also been a disaster. For some reason, eggs are not pipping by Day 23 and Day 24. Yet when I do eggtopsies, the chicks are fully formed. I'm told that
late death in the egg can be related to low temps...but we ran this last batch at 100.5 and had the auto cool feature turned off.
We actually had one of our own silkie eggs hatch in this second batch, and live for two days until I lowered the humidity on the incubator. The unit started dripping water directly onto the baby chick and it died this morning. My daughter was crying today. I felt so bad. Brinsea is having us send back the incubator so they can test it and possibly recalibrate.
I'm not giving up and will keep trying till we get some good hatches!
I read the same thing about high humidity. Ours was set at 35% for incubation and increased to 65% at lockdown. Something must be wrong with our unit. Its very frustrating to see the eggs developing and then nothing hatches.I think i read somewhere that to much humidity can cause them to drown when they pip internally. I am not sure though, I have been doing a lot of reading on this lately in preparation for my first try.
Pics please? I'm in need of a silkie chick fix...15 beautiful silkie babes. My young roo Memphis is wooing the girls so going to start collecting eggs again today
Don't laugh I never learned how to post pics on here. I'll get them together & make an Easter scene on my avatarI read the same thing about high humidity. In my personal experience humidity...lack of.....or too much is everything.I think i read somewhere that to much humidity can cause them to drown when they pip internally. I am not sure though, I have been doing a lot of reading on this lately in preparation for my first try.
It could be that the humdity pump is not calibrated correctly...I will call Brinsea tomorrow and request that they check humidity along with the temp when I send the unit back to them.In my personal experience humidity...lack of.....or too much is everything.
Tina, your problem really sounds like they are drowning in humidity. Not a criticism on my part, just an observation. I am so sorry for you.......
I add NO water to my bators till lockdown ( i advocate dry hatching)when incubating under controlled circumstances. Basement placement is the best in my experience.I've had 100% hatches in my old house's basement of shipped eggs. It is when I try to incubate in other places I suffer the most.
Little to no fluctuations in temps/humidity occur in a below the ground basement..... .....it is just perfect. Something is terribly wrong with your conditions.![]()
Yea! I am happy for you...............15 beautiful silkie babes. My young roo Memphis is wooing the girls so going to start collecting eggs again today
You can't control/moniter the humidity yourself? It could be that the humdity pump is not calibrated correctly...I will call Brinsea tomorrow and request that they check humidity along with the temp when I send the unit back to them.
