I'm in Ridge (Eastern Long Island), originally raised as a Carolina farm girl and I've JUST talked my husband into building a coop in my backyard. Let the fun begin

I've raised/rescued animals my whole life and my family had chickens but they were never MY job, so this will be a new venture for me.
This site and these forums came highly reccommended so I will be looking to you guys for some guidance!

Welcome!

This is a great thread. Lots of support, laughs and advice. And aren't you lucky to live so close to our Chicken Fairy Godmother, a/k/a Stoopid!

We hand hatched the chick that ended up dying. After hatching, it took 2 days for the baby to get up on its feet, so we left it in the incubator by itself with the humidity at 65%. When we dropped the humidity to 35%, that is when the water started dripping during the night. I believe that we have an incubator issue and hope that by sending it back for recalibration, it will solve our problem.
Welcome to the thread! Lots of friendly and helpful folks on here. I'm in the Poughkeepsie/Hyde Park area and loving all our chickens. Tina
That does sound like a problem with the incubator. Good luck with the next batch. Welcome Carolina Island

So nice to have another Long Island chickenkeeper. You've begun a fun adventure. And what luck to be so near our ChickenFairyGodmother!!!!

I'm actually next door on a daily basis, and they're easy to hear when I'm in the yard. Across the street at my house I can only hear your boy every now and then. When my family came to visit, however, they picked up on it right away :)

Question for you guys: should I concentrate on buying locally or are the mail-order companies fairly reliable?

Not that I have any solid answers for you, but are you talking about live chicks, fertile eggs, pullets, adult chickens, feedstuffs, or coop accessories?

The Agway in Riverhead is having chick days starting March 16. I like the idea of picking up the chicks myself. I have had no luck with fertile hatching eggs because of their being at the mercy of the PO. I never had problems with day old shipped chicks although others have. Shows and fairs are a great venue for getting "toddler" to adult birds. And we always get a field trip going for those!
