Welcome Mammo.......nice to see another Long Islander here! DE stand for Diatomaceous Earth.....it is used for mites and slugs. For them it is razor sharp and reeks (sp?) havoc on the critters. I use a hand-cranked blower to spray it inside the coop and along the wood joints of the run where mites like to hide. MUST MUST MUST wear a respirator so that those razor sharp particles don't harm your lungs.

Make sure the chickens are out of the areas that you will spray until it settles. It is also a small component of my dust bath ingredients.

No questions are stupid!
DE= Diatomatacious Earth (hey don't bag me on the spelling!)
BOSS= Black Oil Sunflower Seed
ACV=Apple Cider Vinegar
I'm sure there's more, these are the most common.

Mammo, that black-silver-stipey one is called a Barred Plymouth Rock, or, a "Barred Rock" for short. Healthy, active, chunky, GORGEOUS layers of light-brown eggs. It would be easy to find some Barred Rocks on Craigslist I bet, or someone here may have some. Last week Agway in Riverhead had them, but right now, they have nice Silver Laced Wyandottes. Stunning birds! But they're just baby peeps, so you'd need to take special care of them with a brooder box indoors and a heat lamp and chick grit and chick starter until they were older. Started pullets seem so much easier! God help me, next month I will be raising chicks for the first time! They'll be adorable, friendly mille fleur D'anvers. I'll keep one for myself, and carefully place the others into loving homes. I hope you find the Barred Rocks you're looking for. Our Agatha is a hoot! Her huuuuge eggs are smooth, pinkish, and she herself talks like Beaker from The Muppets. :)

Harborview Hens, your Violet is beautiful!! I love her sweet, cute face!

Traveling to Clark Family Farms on Sunday to pick up our 4 hens( finally). We are adding them to the two girls we have, our new girls are 2 weeks younger than the 2 6 week old hens we have. Any advice? We are new to this. All the hens are "mild" personality and except one
Full size hens.
In CT? Say Hi to Melissa for me and see if they still have "Chipmunk" Roberta/My cochin bantam mutt roo running about the place.

Wanda, my Barred Rock, is pulling her own feathers out. Her feathers are EVERYWHERE and I saw her pull one out. The others don't seem interested. Is this a nutrition issue or a psychological one??
