Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

DD successfully sold all 17 of her newly hatched chicks and we have an order for another dozen. She is very excited about this endeavor. It will be interesting to see if she actually manages the bantam pen by herself this season. I have a feeling that I will be the one to do the clean out part (she likes putting in fresh bedding and collecting eggs and feeding). I suppose that is acceptable since she is only 7. She is already to fire up the incubator again. I need a rest from it for a few weeks. I mean, I only cleaned the thing last night.
I love that child...Can I be her Surrogate grandma please...
Maybe next year illbe able to order a few babies from her.

Quote: Definitely. When we were discussing the re-homing of the chicks she asked about you and if we were going to meet up again this year. I told her that if she gets her butt out of bed in time she can come to the show with me this time. I will bring her by for a bit and then drop her back off at the house and return (it will be too long of a day for her to stay the whole time and I will have to bring back the hatching eggs I am picking up so they don't over heat in the car).

Unless something happens I'm not going to be able to make it this year.Richard is going to be out of town and I don't like straying too far from home when he's gone. Tell her we will definitely get together this summer. Tell her I miss her.

Pick up our new chicks yesterday and everyone seems to be doing great! Everybody is eating, drinking, pooping so I guess all is well. It is kind of crazy how quickly they will just lie down and go to sleep. We thought there was something wrong at first, but I guess it is normal.

How long can they be away from the heat lamp? We like to take them out and hold them, let them wander around but I'm concerned about them getting too cold. Should we wait until they get a little older before letting them explore?

Congrats on the new chicks! They will usually let you know if they get cold. They will make a distressed "cheep". We handle ours often and it makes for some very people friendly hens. It is ok to take them out for some cuddling. Your body temperature is about the same as the brooder. I have found that ours are not really interested in exploring for the first few days though.

OMG biggest spider EVER in my kitchen and I missed it and now it is under my stove

That is something I would never had guessed with you. You don't want to kill that spider...
