Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

I can't take any of those, they are all 1yr plus and since I don't have roosters, I have to be picky about which birds I keep considering mine are about the same age. I.e., I don't have an easy replacement system for the ones that stop laying.
:(
I got an answer that the NH birds were almost 2. I also only have room for layers and no idea what to do with them when they stop. But a group chick order works for me and I know Roberta (a/k/a stoopid) had mentioned it. I ordered 3 from chickensforbackyards.com, so I'm sure they'll do 6 or more.

Suzanne, sounds like you are doing better. As long as there is improvement every day!

This morning I found three of the girls with blood on their backs when I let them out of the coop. Looked like it was on the outside of the feathers, only. I was trying to watch them through the window and only saw a couple of small pecks. I've been trying to figure out the cause and gave them a left over short rib today in case it is a low protein issue. I've upped the scratch, let them range a bit and hung a CD in the run for them to play with. Tomorrow I'll try to find a treat ball and put some cabbage in it. This is frustrating.

Did one of the others have a cut on her neck or chest? Sometimes I find mine all snuggled up in a heap on top of each other, maybe that's what happened.

There you go, we don't need more than a few people for an order. Next newbie question, do they sex the chicks?
I'm not sure, but it wouldn't hurt to call them. Sex link chickens are great for that, but sexing normal chickens is an art. And, I believe it still is not 100% accurate.

Mine always pack together on the top roost. It's the shortest one and they look like sardines up there. I was thinking of adding another length on the opposite wall to get them spread out. One had a lot of blood spots on her neck, but no visible cuts. The others had it in their backs. I'll see if there is a change in the morning.

I just checked the site, duh, and you can buy most breeds by sex except for the rare ones, those you have to buy in straight runs. Of course I want Salmon Faverolles and that is "rare". If I order two and one or both turn out to be male, would anyone be able to take the rooster off my hands? Does anyone want more Faverolles than just a few? I was also thinking about a Welsummer or a Barred Rock.

PS The site I checked was My Backyard Chicken, the one that advertises on the site. Also Al, I love your profile pic so much I was thinking we should all take a picture with a chicken on our head and make it the next internet "meme" like planking. Or at least a fad on BYC.com
