Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

We will not survive the coop building adventure. It's 8 am and we're arguing already.

I have plan books if you want to borrow any....

Thanks. I may take you up on that. I saw a very simple design on the coop thread. 6x6 with an attached run. Bobby keeps telling me if I build something big, the neighbors will report us and then we'll have to get rid of everything. This from the guy who put up a 8x8 shed and then put in electric to it and the coop, I think he just doesn't really want to build it.

And I want it done NOW. Because the girls are too big to be wedged into the space I have now and they're making a racket.

Stormy weather ahead...

But back to hatching eggs. I was thinking of a table at the Stormville Flea Market on April 29. Chickens are sadly underrepresented at that venue. T-shirts (Donna?) Hatching eggs (Roberta?) Eating eggs (everyone?)

I don't have the breeds separated, so they would all be mutts.
But if I could get a few pens to keep them in the right spot....
My personal opinion... the profit wouldn't cover the gas up there, and I know I would be buying waaaay more than I need.
Lemme think on this one.

Smk, Maybe you should just take over the shed...then the neighbors wouldn't notice anything new! My husband grew up in Huntington, and says he can't imagine chickens there. He was implying lots of regulations...I say chickens would only enhance the town.

Edited to remove exclamation point. Too much coffee.

I think you bring up a good point, Glasshen. It's exactly what we did.

Suzanne, we took the back part of the shed, a 4'x8' area, and walled it off. Then put in a pop door and a human door at the rear. We put in a window at the side and there was already a jalousie window in the back. We also attached the run onto the side of the shed.

The nice part is that the shed was there already, and the work to be done is much simpler, and cheaper, than building from scratch.

I'd be interested in going with you Suzanne. Guess I'd have to lay out a little money to buy some tee shirts. Maybe I can call on you all for a vote and print a few sizes of the favorite designs, then do a cheap brochure that highlights the rest. The trick would be to keep costs down.

Actually, Huntington used to be very chicken friendly. Then they banned them, but now they're back. Just wish they'd bring back the Agway!

I did a little sulking and he started asking questions about where I wanted it, and how big, etc. I know my DP - once he gets a pencil behind his ear, he'll be gung ho.

I dragged out my quad ruled (graph paper) notebook, which is the start of all coop planning around here. Also ordered "Building Chicken Coops for Dummies" from amazon.com. That'll get him fired up.

He always tells me he doesn't know how to do this stuff, but he can build anything. Case in point - the converted potting shed that's now a sunroom off the MB.

We actually do use the shed. That's where the (haha) snowblower is kept, along with all the tools Bobby will need to construct the new coop. I told him I wanted him to use the siding he used for the entryway he constructed in the back. That got him going.

Just wait. We will end up with the Taj Mahal of chicken coops if I know this guy!
