I'm sorry for your loss. The first one is so hard. These birds are fragile creatures, as some of us are learning. You were kind to do all that you did. Now your dogwood is a chickenwood tree! Thanks ... Yeah, I opted for burial. I have a small dogwood tree I planted a couple seasons back that has always struggled. I put her under it ... maybe she'll bring it some growth.
George, sorry to hear about Loretta. You cared well for her. Especially at the end.Had my first chicken mortality yesterday. One of my Japanese Bantams, Loretta, took ill during the week. She showed the symptoms of having either some sort of crop/digestive system blockage, or possibly being eggbound: She was lethargic, a bit bloated, not laying, barely eating, drinking or pooping, and lost the color from her comb. Tried all the recommendations -- olive oil at both ends, warm bath and massaging her underside, electrolytes & vitamins and an antibiotic in the water, etc. -- but no improvement. I had her in a crate in the house where she could be warm, quiet and undisturbed by the others, and when she seemed to take a turn for the worse yesterday, I wrapped her in a towel and sat her on my lap while watching the hockey playoffs. That's when she let go.
Which leads me to a question ... what have others done with their chicken's remains when they've passed on? Buried in the backyard, burned, or disposed of in the garbage? I'm not sure which is the right thing to do, but I'm leaning toward burial. Thoughts?
On a happier note ... smkchick: Love the photo above. Where'd you get popovers shaped like dog heads?! Looks just like a bloodhound!
George
Between the chicken math and the ebay addiction we are going to need a therapist on staff (this thread )I bought my eggs off ebay last Oct. I had good success with them never having hatched any before.I broke my addiction to ebay quite a while ago and you ladies are making it very hard on me.I want Russian Orloffs, Salmon Favs and another Polish since all mine were roos.My problem is I only want one of each. Maybe I can find singles at Sussex NJ. Speaking of that how are you guys going to avoid the auction they have there? You can get so caught up in the moment of bidding you will need to bring a truck.

I don't know why I'm laughing. I've got 6 hens in my coop, 3 in the brooder, 5 viable eggs in the incubator and 12 eggs coming in the mail. Forget the truck. I'm going to need a new house in a new neighborhood with a new boyfriend...
Finally finished reading all the posts from yesterday. You guys were busy in the bidding war department. I smell an addiction here, big time! I have to keep telling myself not to get started with trying to hatch eggs, but I know it is useless to resist forever. Nice to see all of you having such a great time.
Suzanne, sounds like you had a good time at Stormville. We wound up replacing the siding and shutters on the house that got damaged when the tree fell during Irene. Our two sons did all the work and I got tired just holding the ladder and getting beat up from the wind. we were going to go down toward the city and figured we can do that another week. The siding really needed to be fixed.
I think we solved the festher picking problem. The girls have taken to the peepers and have not had any ill effects. They have been laying as they usually do, too. It's all good.
Everything I have tried to look up on the subject was contradictory. Some said they have had them on for a year and a half and are leving them on. Some said they left them on for a few months and it cured the problem. It seems more leave them on than take them off, so I have no idea if they will retrain or not. No hard and fast rules I guess.Quote:
Glad to hear you found a solution to the problem. Do the peepers stay on forever or is it a retraining thing?
