what was the boat for? Flood?
Yes. The water was in our house and you couldn't get out any other way.

Give him a second to catch his breath . He doesn't want to talk about breeds he's checking out the photo.LOL

I did mention breeds it was probably missed cause it was buried in the middle of post #3641 on page 365.

  • Considering (don't know all the abbreviations used here) Barred Plymouth Rock, Black Australorp, Red Star (Red Sex Link) & Buff Orpington. What'd you think? Any suggestions?

I stepped in the middle of a conversation and tried to intro myself, so it got a bit confusing.

But yes, I've caught my breath, got a good night's sleep, time to finish my coffee & go work on the coop since it's not raining!

Wow, that Beanie is a riot! Rofl! I did a double-take! Luckily I wasn't drinking a beverage!

Anyways, not to change the subject...but..

Hi, I'm new to the boards been building a coop and searching the net for info and Google always seemed to lead me back to BYC. So instead of just poking around I decided to join.

I'm in Sullivan County NY, in the Catskill Mtn area near the old Catskill getaway 'The Nevele'.

No chickens yet, still building a coop.

Hi Maxx, welcome to the thread. BYC is about the best resource on the net for chicken info, and this thread might just be the craziest. Yup, lots of fun on here. We're all a bunch of good eggs.

Good luck completing the coop. Post some pics of your progress.

I walk around all day in my Derby hat .People think I've lost my mind. I lived across from Church Hill Downs when I wast a child.Pretty much lived every where. I'm an Army brat My dad was in the Army for 26 years. (My brother was in the Air Force for 22). One of my earliest childhood memories was sitting on top of the refrigorator with my brother John(He was holding my brother Alex) Finally some men camp with a boat ;up to our door and took us away.I remember driving along and seeing pigs on top of roofs of small buildings. We lost everything . We never went back. One day I will get to the derby. Something is drawing me back there. SORRY for being such a downer..

Sorry. What a horrible thing to have happened. That had to be tough on you and your sibs.

I have an actual chicken-related question for you all - shocker -

One of my hens, I suspect the White Rock, has been laying thin to no-shell eggs on and off and it's gotten worse lately. Sometimes they are out underneath the roosting perch, like she laid it while sleeping. Those have no shell at all, just membranes. I've been mixing in shells with cooked scrambled eggs to feed back to them along with some oyster shell pieces. I also keep oyster shells mixed in with the grit bucket in the coop. I am giving them layer crumble feed, they don't free-range all day and lately I've been keeping them locked up even more since the fox sighting on Thursday. This morning a hawk flew into the new exercise pen we built, as in, it flew into the wire mesh siding - duhhhhh - so I'm definitely not letting them out.

Is there anything else to do? I bought some liquid mineral supplement for pet birds that are laying but it said for pets only, i.e., is it safe to give to chickens? You add it to the water.

Is it a dietary deficiency or something else? The other two seem to be laying ok eggs. I should add that J. Lo's eggs have always been a bit wonky. Their shape is "unique", sometimes there is a calcified deposit at the end of the shell that's bumpy, sometimes they are wrinkly looking, sometimes they are streaky or spotted or faded in color from one end to the other. She's the diva I guess!

I'm sorry for your experience. Seems like everyone is experiencing extreme weather these days. Everytime there is another tornado or flood in the Midwest it breaks my heart.

I just finished "making" my Derby hat with my girls. Got a feather from each of my three hens and pinned them onto a $16 hat from Marshalls with a big fake rose!

I have a few girls that lay those rubbery balls.
It is a calcium deficiency. But they are all fed the same thing, layer pellets mixed with scratch.
I guess some girls pick aroung the pellets, and just eat scratch.
