You can tell I was beat. I slept through the jet engine!! Glad you're getting it fixed today. Definitely sounded serious a/k/a expensive.

Oh so pretty! Please consider bathing the new birds in flea and tick shampoo and try for a two week quarantine. Mites and lice are almost microscopic and not readily visible to the naked eye. A bath will help to flush them out if they are in hiding. Then check again in one week since eggs can hatch in 7-10days. Love their colors and cute names!

Ok, great! I just came on here to ask for how long to quarantine. Two weeks? I don't have anything other than a cat carrier to keep her in. Hmm... maybe I'll confine her to a bathroom. God, husband will love that. Is there anything else to look out for?

. We looked at the chicks for a few seconds, then I helped Heather find the sales cages

, then we trotted the children over to the rides because they just couldn't wait any longer

. I looked for you again when I got back that direction, but you were probably off on a fair adventure by then.

I never thought chicken math would happen to me, and yet here I am, proud owner of 6 chickens plus two maybe fertile eggs being sat on by a broody. HUH!? Whathappened?

Ok, did I really need to come home with a D'Uccle Mille Fleurs pullet? Need is such a subjective adverb.... well as soon as Christine helpfully pointed out the sale cages (my husband says THANKS, btw) and I saw there were 4 D'Uccles for sale, well, it was a done deal.

Jane promptly named her Cinnamon, which matches very well with her bantam sister to be Nutmeg. For those of you keeping track, yep this is what she originally named Chipmunk but changed it at the last minute, then of course Chippy turned out to be a he, and well, I guess it worked out for the best. Cinnamon was very calm on the ride home, and after getting her some feed and letting her calm down after getting home, I finally checked her out, which would have been smarter to do on the spot, duh. She seems very healthy, no mites around the vent, no scaly leg, eyes clear and bright, and she is also extremely clean, having been bathed recently I suspect. Christine please tell the young man that sold her to me thank you so much, he has made me very happy! I'm keeping her in solitary for another few days just to be sure but hoping to get her integrated soon. I think my flock is becoming the Our Gang group in diversity.

It was so nice to see everyone that made it to the fair today, and I was reminded again what an awesome group of people I have met through this site. Thanks again y'all, and happy summers to everyone. Now if anyone is interested in some Rhode Island Red chicks that might hatch at the end of August, please let me know.... ;-)

Yes, you really did need to come home with the little D'Unccle since you have been hoping for that for a long time. Please send my "your very welcomes" to your very tolerant and understanding hubby. I didn't see the young man today, but I will look for him again when I am there on Friday.

I have kept them in quarantine in a dog crate for 2 weeks in the house. I just take them out and carry them around with me and we have a nice walk in the yard every day (or in the playpen in the yard, think small fenced in area while I garden), then into the crate for an hour or two here and there to eat/poo/drink then in again at night to sleep. I find it really helps them to get used to you and lets them be in a relatively low stress environment for a time (since they have just been taken out of one flock, before sticking them in with another).

For instance, the most incredibly adorable and sweet silkies that Vera was kind enough to bring this direction for me are chirping softly at the side of my desk as I type this. Have I mentioned how much I love them? I LOVE them!!!! So does everyone else. They are getting a lot of lap time.

I didn't have any time to hang out with her today other than to give her a bath. I went with regular Johnson's Baby Shampoo and a lice/mite spray for birds after. She even had a little blow-dry and tolerated it very well, also a nail trim. Again, she seems very healthy. When I went in to check on her just now she was perched on the sink handle, so I deposited her in the crate for the evening instead.

Lia decided that Lilly was her new best friend, btw - both girls had so much fun on the rides and I think Lilly helped tremendously. She's adorable!

The other pet news of the day is that our hamster is feeling very poorly, to the point where I took her to the vet. I know, I know, it's a hamster but she is just about the most awesome, sweetest hamster ever, and that's not just me saying that. She's a therapy hamster and has been loaned out to families with children that are afraid of animals and cured more than a few kids of their fears. The vet said she has an advanced cold, hopefully not pneumonia. So I started the hamster on antibiotics and food supplements tonight. I also discovered that brooder lamps are also good for keeping chilly hamsters warm. I really hope she pulls through, she's only 1 1/2.

Sounds like you have a good handle on the quarantine and I'm sure your hen will be fine. Sorry to hear about your little hamster, I hope she gets better.

Heading up to Buffalo to visit my brother and sister-in-law. And the Erie County Fair. I'd love to sneak an animal carrier into the car, but I think Bobby's watching for ninja evidence. I can't wait to see the chickens at the Fair!

My back's bad this morning. Had trouble sleeping last night. I did a lot of running around, including shopping for sneakers. I think all that in/out of the car and bending over to put on sneaks did me no good. *sigh*

Yesterday I realized that the 6 bananas I had bought were under a dishtowel and so no one ate them. Baked up a couple of loaves of banana bread. The Louisville Slugger zucchini is coming up to Buffalo with me so we can enjoy it fresh. Yummy!

Bobby's friend asked him if Laura knew how to take care of the chickens. Bobby explained how we have automatic chickens. Spreading the chicken love!

Hello all,

Just found this thread, and being a Dutchess County resident, I wanted to reach out and give a big hello!  I am new to chicken ownership, have 10 adorable little girls out in my feed room of my horse barn, and they are all doing happy, and healthy things.  I am a total newbie, and have found BYC so very useful.  Hope you don't mind me asking questions from time to time, as I need so much guidance it isn't funny!  Hope you are all well, and look forward to connecting with you all.
