Well yesterday at 530 i woke up to the chickens squaking went to see what was going on, and came around the corner and 10 feet from me their was a VERY large bear..... he ran off but in the process ripped through my fencing... so After fixing that, I went back to bed.... later around lunch time I went out to get the eggs, came around the corner again and this time their was a even bigger bear, and it had 2 little cubs.... 10 feet from me..... I really dont know how she left me alone, but she did..... SOOOOO I think its time I got a 12 gauge..... I should have died twice yesterday....
Caleb, I'm glad you lived to tell us the tale.
Never turn your back in a bear. Face it and walk away slowly, while speaking to it. It knows you are human then and most likely will not charge. Make some clapping noise too, but remember to never turn your back on it and don't run.
At the risk of sounding like the gun toting psycho that I might be, here goes my suggestion;
First, get that 12 gauge and make it a pump or semi-auto. Second, make sure you have it loaded with slugs, not buckshot. Get the hottest loads you can buy. In fact, your local gunship should know which loads are best. Then, make sure you know how to use it and are familiar with the accurscy of those slugs. You don't want to wound a bear with cubs.
Here's the thing. I don't want to read a newspaper article that says a young man was mauled by a Black Bear with cubs. I'd rather read a young man is alive because he shot an attacking Black Bear with cubs. As much as I don't like leaving baby animals to fend for themselves, I know that there are Veterinarians, like mine, who will care for wild animals until they can be sent to rehab and then be released back into the wild. I'd much rather sacrifice a bear than to have any harm come to anyone, let alone a great young man like Caleb.
Caleb, please be careful and don't take any chances at all.
