Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Sign me up for a Valentine's Day chick. Oh yeah. Just what Bobby wants!

I'm actually thinking of adding a couple of hens. I'm at 4 and I'm allowed 8. Chicken math anyone?

I can set Gladys up with someone her own age. Maybe that's why she's so cranky.
My friend is downsizing her laying flock for the winter, to get ready for the silkie population explosion about to happen soon!

Morning!
The only thing that freaks me out about "holiday" chicks are those people who get them without really knowing about them or what to do with them. I'm sure though that you'd make sure they end up somehwere to live a happy life! I would love to get a couple of silkies.....I have been drooling over them but hubby already has said he wouldn't be very happy. Think I could sneak them in?

Sure Maggie you can live in Pa. with us but we dont need a house keeper we need farm help. I cant kill the poison ivy for the heck of me. Its more like thick vines growing every where & the field needs cutting every week. Roberta I hatched out 40 silkie chicks sept 12. I never expected 40 out of 41 to hatch. I wanted to have silkie pullets to be ready in the spring to sell. I cant see having that many in the coop/basement over the winter so I sold 35 of them on CL with in 2 weeks. I had good response but sold them at $8. each. In the spring I was getting $15. each for 2 day old chicks. People knew they would have to be under heat for several more weeks but I think if I asked $15. this late in season, I dont think I would have good response. I am going to get another hatch going in Jan. but they wont go for sale until feb-march.

I'd love to get a BO or a RIR. And I've thought about Gladys needing company...If it were a laying hen, Bobby would be so excited about the eggs he'd never squawk (get it) about the other chicken.

Gave her frozen corn niblets this morning. She loved them. I also baked up some eggshells and crushed them to add to her oyster shell. Nothing goes to waste!

The one neighbor I was really worried about struck up a conversation with Bobby over the fence yesterday all about the shed (illegal) we're building and the chicken and hawks, etc. I figure when I start getting some eggs, I'll take some next door. We haven't had the smoothest history and that will surely help. Something about spreading eggs on troubled waters?

OK, so I guess it helps that my daughter's in the fire department with both him and his son. But the eggs couldn't hurt either!

There is no killing it. You have to manually remove it. UGH. I bought 2 acres of it 10 years ago, it takes time, but we did it.
There weren't vines, there were trees of poison ivy!
$8.00? You crazy, woman! For your beauties?
I don't know....
