Here's how we ninja things in at my house. Wait til Bobby's had a couple of drinks to celebrate the completion of the new toolshed (any excuse is a good one) then say "Hey Bobby, how do you feel about getting a hen around Gladys's age to keep her company?" When he starts complaining, I just smile and say okay honey. Then he says "Whatever you say, honey." His ex-wife used to hate it when he said that. I love it. Because he means it.
Even my chicken math won't let me get more than 2! That would put me at 6, which would already mean a second coop expansion. Although I would consider the Speckled Sussex.
So let's see, if Bobby said "Whatever you want" to 1 chicken that means 2 are okay right?
I could take one off your hands and one off Roberta's hands (like I'm doing you a favor and not getting more chickens, right?). Here's how my chicken math works: Gladys needs a friend, but if I get only 1 chicken the babies will outnumber them and that's not fair. Right? And I can't get one of your chickens without getting one of Roberta's too because that's not fair either. Right? Right?
And then I have 6 hens, which gives me clearance for 2 more in the Spring.
Which I already started thinking about. Definitely a BO. An EE? Or Silver laced Wyandote? I like the idea of them all being different. That way if I want to add more I can get a second one of the same type and it won't count...
How much would you ask for the SS? I'll buy some eggs, too. Since you're a neighbor and all...
I am so very sorry you had to find her that way. Chickens like humans can be down right cruel to each other...............my astralorp picks on my silkie some days for no reason pther than tp be a bully I think. Ive got silke/peeps in their pwn space right now so she can relax. Astralorp resumes bullying she will go live someplace else pretty quick. That usually solves a buly problem.

Maggie, my Australorp chick is the one who seems the most confident and nosy. She's always got her head up and pushes the others out of the way to eat or drink. Must be a breed thing! My Golden Buff is the sweetest. She had an umbilical hernia type thing when I got her so I was very hands-on and protective with her. The BR chick seems the most skittish. I love how they already have distinct personalities.
Here's the update. As I was freaking out over going to the ER (after Googling and thinking the infection hit my brain) the wife said, "why not put a call into the doctor first?" Brilliant! So, I called and had a conversation with the doctor who was covering and she told me to hold off on the antibiotic I was taking for tonight. It could be a reaction, and one night is not going to make the infection any worse. If I am better in the morning, then we switch the antibiotic. If not, then I may need a steroid along with the antibiotic. If it had hit my brain I would have felt way worse and had some neurological issues showing up.
So far, after a long nap, the vision is a little better. I will know more by the morning.
Thanks for the well wishes. Talk to you guys later.
