Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Um.... six. :lau  That's the legal limit.
However, chicken math has gotten the best of me.
Somewhere between 6 and 200, pretty much right smack in the middle.
Unless you are from the town. Then I have 6 hens.

Lol okay so you. Have six....they must be some fat chickens going through all that food....if someone from. The town shows up, just feed the towns person to the chickens and save yourself some food cost :)

We don't have a limit in town here, but I'm still worried about my neighbor...only law is no roosters :(

Thanks toxic that is exactly what I needed to hear.
FYI it also depends on what kind of slobs your chickens are. Mine were wasting a lot of food by throwing it all on the floor. Nothing I did seemed to work, raising the feeder, lowering the feeder, changing the feeder, etc. I finally tried cutting a piece of large gauge chicken wire to cover the food - check out TillysNest.com for directions - and that seems to have finally worked. In the warmer months you can also let the chickens free-range and they won't eat as much feed then. Just watch for predators etc. There's different opinions on how much table scraps to give your birds.... some say none, others say a little, some feed the chickens almost entirely from left-overs. I'm thinking there are more expereinced owners on here that will set me straight. I try to limit bread & dairy and just give them left over veg, fruit, etc. They do love the fish that die in the freshwater tank.... sigh....

For those of you who do canning, lowes is having fifty percent off select canning supplies etc. I want to learn so I picked up the balls guide as someone suggested and a few cases of jars.
The sale is regional so checkout the website with your zip code first, and it last until January but many stores are running out. Since I am a first timer I don't know if the prices are great but 12 32 ounce jars are $5.29, 9 24 ounce jars $5.43 , 4 8 ounce $1.49.

Happy shopping :)

Those are GREAT prices. I'm going to check with my local Lowes!! Thanks!!!

Naturally I don't have a Lowe's anywhere near me... :( and someone sent me this link to a lecture series - http://www.thinkinganimals.org/lecture_series.html - that looks fascinating, especially the one on the 26th -
Chicken Tales

Joseph Barber, Mark Hauber

Who would have guessed that an animal that we take so for granted has such a rich a history with us, is so unique and is as intelligent as it is? Chickens make great pets, they talk to each other while still in the egg, they have a sense of time, recognize their friends and can run up to 9 miles per hour. Some are exotically beautiful. It’s time to reconsider these unsung birds.

OF COURSE that would be the day I bought tickets for the family to go see the Blaze event in Croton. Argh!!!!

Anyone want to go see some jack o' lanterns with my family? Would it be really, really awful if I gave the ticket to my sister in law and went to the lecture instead? How bad a mother would that make me, on a scale of 1 to 10?

Meanwhile, in unrelated news, one of the pumpkins I had on the front porch already got smushy, so guess who got a snack today:

Great pic of your hen with the pumpkin.

I've been preparing all the veggies I got from my
CSA yesterday. I need to take up canning. Gonna
go check out Lows.

Save yourself some time and checkoutthewebsite first with your zip or call, I talked to two different locations today and apparently they are selling out like crazy. I couldn't get any here near me , so my husband got some up near Albany. I did ship to store and prepurchased them last night and this morning and he just walks in and picks them up at customer service.
