Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Week just keeps getting better...I have family in Jamaica, sandy was not nice. No power every window in the house broke even after being reinforced, all the trees down. Some roofing down. Soooooooo last year we had Halloween snow, this year sandy? Good news is all the candy I bought I like so I can eat it :) lol

My yard flooded last hurricane and my friends lost their entire first floor...the mall here will be flooded for sure if we get water. I am glad the chicks are inside though :) all we can do is move the patio furniture and be ready with batteries....last year we had three days without power and eventually had to try and buy batteries only to find out that target and the supermarkets had all sold out.

Good luck everyone with being prepared .

According to weather underground it is not looking good for us here on Long Island. It looks like we are going to be on the north side of the eye so that means the bad whipping winds added with the full moon. with all the food I have in my freezer from my garden I really need to look into a generator.i can't remember what I did last year with the chickens when Irene was suppose to hit us.i usually put sheets of plywood on the sides of the run for the winter to cut the wind.i guess I better get to home depot before its all gone tomorrow.
Good luck everyone getting prepared.

Not to be a tree hugging, granola crunchy, PETA person, cause I am not... and you all might be aware of this already, but here goes, before we have calico hawks flying around, don't scare or otherwise harass it if it is on the endangered migratory bird list... huge fines if you get caught.

Here is a link to thread for permits for permanent removal of migratory birds including raptors, in case they become a real issue for you.
http://www.fws.gov/migratorybirds/mbpermits.html

"Legal Status

All hawks and owls are federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (16 USC, 703-711). These laws strictly prohibit the capture, killing, or possession of hawks or owls without special permit. No permits are required to scare depredating migratory birds except for endangered or threatened species (see Table 1), including bald and golden eagles.

In addition, most states have regulations regarding hawks and owls. Some species may be common in one state but may be on a state endangered species list in another. Consult your local USDA-APHIS-Wildlife Services, US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), and/or state wildlife department representatives for permit requirements and information."

I tried to find information specific to NY, but was unsuccessful. I have 3 or 4 a day around here and I have trained my dog to go berserk when he hears them, but that doesn't stop them from buzzing our yard at a couple hundred miles per hour. It is only a matter of time before one makes off with a bird or two. We have the Harrier and broad winged version lately. I think they could make off with a small kid they are so huge...

Christine thank you so much for beating me to this. I go insane when the idiots at my country club drive over the nesting killdeer in the parking lot because they are "in the way".

I know, I know, no-one likes the idea of hawks eating our babies but at least pause for a moment and think "I'll break that Bird Nerd's heart if I shoot this" plus you know, maybe get a ginormous fine.

No chicks yet, tomorrow is day 21 :)
I think I will bring my broody inside cause her hutch
sits on the ground and I don't think sandy will be kind to
her and little ones.
I got a small dark brown egg today, I think it's from
my welsummer even though she is only 4 1/2 months.
She is the youngest but I just don't know which other hen
would lay an egg like that. It's as small as the ones my
silky lays /shrug

We definitely need some good luck. Last year Hurriane Irene did a number on our house which resulted in needing a new roof, new gutters and new ceilings in several rooms due to the leaking roof. Two days later we had a pipe burst in our finished basement which ruined the carpet. I'm not ready for another hurricane.

I've been looking at the Radars. Oy. I do not need this Sandy mess.

I've put together a small list of emergency things to do- if anyone is like me, I need a list in front of me when in panic mode.

They're saying wide spread long term power outages, so peeps-you know what to do to save your frozen stuff! Freeze as many bottles of water as you can fit in the freezer, and fit them into every open nook in the freezer. Place some extras on top of things, to use in the fridge as well. The closer the stuff is together-the longer it will stay frozen, or cold.

Batteries!! Can't stress the importance of having TOO many of these. I always stick up until I say "I really don't need all of these durned things", then I get a few more. The silliest things need batteries.
Fill the car gas tank. Too expensive? I know, but if there's an evacuation-those stations will already be shut down. Out here-with the size of the storm-this is a REAL possibility. The other possibility is that the gas stations won't be opening for awhile (They need electricity too) unless you have one of those old old old gas stations that has manual pumps.

Pasta, bottled water, and canned sauce. These are things that last fore a very long time. Make sure you have enough.

Fill all prescriptions if they are going to run out soon. Pharmacies are all on computers and they cannot refill you without accessing your records.

Along the same lines-keep some cash on hand-ATM's credit cards will be useless.

Tape the windows and glass doors. Bring all things that could become airborne, inside. use masking tape. Duct tape will leave impossible to remove gummy gook on your windows. After taping, pull drapes once the storm arrives-even blinds will help if your windows blow in.

If you have a fire place for heat-bring in all the wood you're gonna need. That includes kindling. They're saying we could get some snow with this. Be ready to keep warm. Blankets, sweatshirts, warm socks-simple things. Make them accessible.

Flashlights, lanterns and candles. Have lots. Walmart sells double packs for something like 4 dollars. I have loads of these for camping. I'll be checking them and replacing batteries. I also have 2 of those big battery operated lanterns. Good to eat dinner by or play games with the kids (or adults) Monopoly saved my sanity last year. the kids were happy and occupied.

Lighters! Those long candle lighting lighters are a lifesaver as well. I use them for everything and keep several extras around my house. You can also light the stove with them!!

I'm sure most of you know all of these things, but I think I just helped myself by making a list of stuff I need to check on as well. Please-everyone stay safe and if you lose power, please check in as soon as you can. We all can feel better if we know everyone is ok.

I'm going shopping early this morning-just a few more basics. I also need extra dog food, cat food, bird food and chicken food. (I think that's all the animals I have...) OH fish food? No-I have enough fish food. My fireplace insert is being installed today, so I have to be done and home by 11:30. With football all weekend, and shopping for my middle guys birthday on Tuesday (last one in October! YAY!) today is the only day for stocking up some more.
