Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Sorry I have been out of it for a while. Ended up in the ER on Wednesday AM in a hypertensive crisis (188/122). Odd thing, my pulse was only 65. Kind of a challenge to medicate me since it is low in the day time. Whatever this is it is causing a BP spike at night, and a pounding headache in the am (several other unusual symptoms as well, neuro stuff). Off to the specialists this week. So irritating since I have taken very good care of myself since I was a kid, d@#@%m genetics beat me every time no matter what I do. The medication is wiping me out in the daytime, but at least my pressure is lower (90/60 now). Several odd diagnoses in the list of possibilities, so please keep your fingers crossed for me. So, if you are looking for me, I am probably taking a nap.

Quail update: they make a great alarm clock. One of the wee ones got out of the brooder again (there is a small space between the wire and the wall) and was chirping for help. Such a cute chirp, but all the babies in the brooder were chirping back so it was quite loud. Think about how much noise 28 birds making a call at the same time can make. Wow. Still cute though.

Karen, so glad you are back! I will sequester the blue egg crew and get some eggs to you!

Carol, so exciting! Keep us posted!

I can't wait to hatch some babies :)
I have chick fever.

My cream legbar is doing well, except shes in the bottom of the flock and gets picked on. No eggs yet. Soon I hope. I'll try and get a pic of her tomorrow, she's real pretty.
Thinking about trying to hatch more.

I'm getting old, 50# bags of feed are killing me, last month I pulled a muscle in my back, this month my shoulder. Wish they came in 25# bags. Guess I need to work out.

Sorry your feeling blah, hope you Feel better soon.

Cheeky Chick.....

I forgot how many you have but I made a tractor out of PVC....they like it although Inammsure they would rather free range. It is another option. Cheaper than fencing. BTW, my fencing is the usual stuff on the roll with vertical stakes from Home Depot. But here, I have fox, hawks, owls, possum, racoons etc. I do feel comfortable with having them in the chicken tractor. Would be happy to post a picture and send a link to the plans.

Hi Mammo,

I feed mine freeze dried meal worms. Get them from www.tastyworms.com. It is like crack for chickens! :p Also, found out that percatelli pasta has a great texture. They fight over it as though they are real worms. Hysterical to watch them chase after each other.:D

I have a light brahma Pullet. She started laying March 24th and I am getting 4-5 eggs a week. I agree, they are so sweet and lovely. Plus, my Daphne, is always the first to try out things and lead the way out to the chicken tractor. Her fluffy pantaloon legs and feet always have me laughing.

For a roosting board, we used a 2x6 with the 6 side up. Half the flock sits on that, the other half prefers the shelf next to it.

Tonight the babies were huddled away from the heat source. I guess that means I can get rid of it now. May wait a few more days til it's a little warmer.

I have to post some pics of Pearl, our bantam frizzle cochin. She is just too cute for words! All the NJ chicks are feathering out beautifully. Love them!

Rosie, when we were attempting to reestablish a lawn (haha), we got a roll of that really cheap plastic fencing from HD and keep it on a spool to roll out across the yard. It creates a temporary fence to keep the girls on the patio. FYI, for now I've given up on a back lawn. I'm going to work on the front until I can afford sod in the back. That should be right after I hit the lottery or get my job back, whichever comes first. Like getting struck by lightning...

That would be great, Irene. Although I'm not certain a tractor would work in my yard-it's hills, bumps, trees, and lots of wood piles and ground cover- rolling it around would be hard if not impossible (Although my sons might be persuaded to do it...

I'm so sorry to hear that you're having health issues-genetics ARE the worst-I've been fighting against mine for years. Rest up, and we'll keep fingers and wings crossed that you feel better soon!!!
