Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Morning all,
Christina sent you a PM.

Been in my home for 27+ years ,have had ever type of bird pass thru, as well as stay and nest. Well this year for the first time I have a pair of Black Capped Chikadees nesting in a house I bought last year. Of all things it is a wooden rooster.they are tapping their fool heads off trying to hollow it out a little more. I hope they stay.

Tina , how are your babies that you got from NJ. My little frizzle is hilarious . Rene does sell great birds.

Enjoy the day.

PS welcome to any newbie I have missed.

JerseyHen, may the neuro specialist give you a definitive diagnosis, and come up with a treatment plan you can feel good about! I'll be sending good thoughts for a speedy resolution to the BO mystery and smooth sailing back into wellness for you.

the frizzle cochin sounds adorable! I'd love pics sometime.

What a glorious day today. I'm wishing everyone a chance to enjoy the beautiful sunshine and fresh air. Have a great day, everyone!

I too have taken real good care of myself, and like you genetics have beat me. I take Benicar 05. But I still end up in the hospital every few weeks. For no reason at all, I wake up in the morning and a few hours later, I am throwing up like crazy and have to be rushed to the hospital. High blood pressure is the only thing that is wrong with me, and it kicks my butt. I hope your doc finds the right dose to keep your pressure in check. I wish you well.

I think I want to try keeping Coturnix Quails. Does anyone know anyone that keeps them on Long Island? I'd like to pick their brain before I dive in.

I have to get out and get DE, fresh hay, and do some coop-poop-scooping. My youngest is going to school today, he seems much better, still has the cough, but is breathing easier, and no fever at all-I'm guessing a touch of allergies. I'm going to up his honey consumption. (Local honey has been our savior from allergies. It really does work, but you must eat it all year long) I also have to clear more area for gardens. Should be fun with my tennis elbow!

What are everyone's plans for this pretty day?

Hi there, I am from Carmel. we are embarking on our trip to chicken hood. We bought one of those little chicken coops that come in a box. we put it on a pallet and now we are planting flowers around the small coop. Yesterday my grandsons and I went and bought hay, a water thingy and a feeder. now all I need are the 4 chickens I promised them I would get. the thing is I can't find any chickens anywhere. I am afraid to order on line, as I have no idea what those birds go through. (advise). Can anyone point me in the right direction. Thanks.

I read the postings almost everyday. Some are very entertaining.. I am so glad this place is here to make us all smile, and for valid information. THANK YOU ALL!!!

Warmest, heartfelt welcome to you, Rose! One idea might be to find your chickens as started pullets on Craigslist. This way, you can choose the breed you'd like, and not have to start with chicks who need a bit more specialized care than pullets would. Plus, getting 4 girls from the same farm might mean they already get along well and know eachother.

Are you mainly looking for hens for eggs? Or for certain ornamental looks? Or do you want a social, pet-type breed of hens who can be easily picked up and handled by young grandsons? Whichever qualities you're looking for, and whichever breeds, Craigslist often has chickens within driving distance, though not always close-by. This is how we got our 4 hens.

Another option might be to ask folks in this thread if anyone has the breed you are looking for, and where they got their hens from, or even perhaps if they may have some available. With it being springtime, some of us will have chicks, or may even have adult birds. Can't hurt to ask.

Lastly, a further idea might be to look on the "Buy Sell Trade" area of the forum. I'm just tossing these ideas out there for you to consider, or not.

It is still a bit early to tell (and the one in question was a bit blurry), but post another set of pics in a week and I might be able to give you a reasonable guess. I can say that I usually can tell which of the dark brahmas will be boys by their posture at week 3 or so. They also will start to develop the pea comb rows long before the girls. All of mine feathered in much later than the girls too. I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

My brahmas lay between 3 and 4 eggs a week as hens, 4 - 5 as pullets. I think. It is hard to tell since I have so many out there (I am never sure who is laying what anymore). They are very friendly birds though. My dark brahma roo is the sweetest thing around.

Thanks JerseyHen and I hope you feel better...so nice of you to help me out when you have other things to think about. When you get around to it I have another question...pullets are young hens correct? I did some reading on dark brahmas and they said males turn black while the hens get the pencil king on the wings and such. Penny, the one we hope is a hen has the penciling on the wings, but her growth period is slower than the other. The other db, Nugget, has a nice tail growing and the comb is coming in along with the other chicks. Maybe Penny is just extremely slow...we'll find out I guess.
