Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Hi Mammo,

I feed mine freeze dried meal worms. Get them from www.tastyworms.com. It is like crack for chickens! :p Also, found out that percatelli pasta has a great texture. They fight over it as though they are real worms. Hysterical to watch them chase after each other.:D

I have a light brahma Pullet. She started laying March 24th and I am getting 4-5 eggs a week. I agree, they are so sweet and lovely. Plus, my Daphne, is always the first to try out things and lead the way out to the chicken tractor. Her fluffy pantaloon legs and feet always have me laughing.

Do you think freeze dried is better than the live meal worms?? I was going to get a jar of dead ones but found the live and they love them. Now when I walk in the room they chirp like crazy and stare at me...it's all hilarious, I have a lot of fun watching them. Thank you for that web address though.

Hi there, I am from Carmel.  we are embarking on our trip to chicken hood.  We bought one of those little chicken coops that come in a box.  we put it on a pallet and now we are planting flowers around the small coop.  Yesterday my grandsons and I went and bought hay, a water thingy and a feeder.   now all I need are the 4 chickens I promised  them I would get.  the thing is I can't find any chickens anywhere.  I am afraid to order on line, as I have no idea what those birds go through.  (advise).  Can anyone point me in the right direction.  Thanks.

I read the postings almost everyday.  Some are very entertaining.. I am so glad this place is here to make us all smile, and for valid information.  THANK YOU ALL!!!
Rose

Hi Rose! Welcome. I am in Rockland. I have eleven girls right now, soon to be more . I know you said four Hens, do you have a specific breed you want? If your willing to travel there are some local farms. I have had better luck finding chicks in NJ. Also the Sussex county fair is coming up on the 18th in nj and might be of interest to you and your grandsons if you haven't determined on a breed you want. I found someone in northern jersey who is selling started pullets, chicks, or hatching eggs. I would be willing to hatch chicks for you, but there is no guarentee that you would get females. There is a tractor supply near you that had chicks a few weeks ago,(845)-878-7215 if you want hatchery chicks. Best of luck and welcome once again.

Hi Everyone.
I'm from from Mastic/ Shirley Long Island. I have 6 hens which I got this year about a week before Easter. I am currently in the process of building their coop in my backyard.
Have any of you ever thought of having a meetup or get together to share ideas, etc in person?

i actually posted this in another thread and was directed to this thread, so I figured,I'd repost it here..

Btw, I have 2 leghorns, 2 Rhode Island Reds and 2 Bantams

Welcome, Jmrosalia!

I'm rather new here and haven't met anyone in person, but I believe others in this thread have enjoyed meet-ups in person. Anyway, very pleased to meet you! What type of bantams do you have?

Thank you so much for responding to me. I have made plans to go to the fair with my grandchildren on the 18th. It will be my very first time at a fair of this type. Everyday they ask me about the chickens, Soon I will run out of excuses. I have no idea what I am doing. Just watching a lot of videos about coops and chickens. I have also been reading about different breeds. I keep a list of the chickens I like. they will need to be hardy to cold/hot. not broody and friendly. with the ability to give us nice big eggs. lol, am I asking for too much? These chickens will be loved and spoiled.

Welcome nature... And jmr...you're going to really enjoy this thread.lots of great people with tons of peep knowledge.
I'm in east Islip have a mixed bag of girls . NN,Russian Orloffs, salmon Favs,a frizzle, polish etc...

Does anyone have a chicken that cannot get along with anyone? I do. Little Periscope the Showgirl, is proving to be a nasty little curmudgeon. Starts pecking fights with everyone, freaks out if you look at her/him the wrong way, and goes after other chickens that try to eat or drink at the same time. I'm not sure if it's hormonal or just a bad attitude that needs adjusting.

Do you think separating her/him from the others for a few days might help? I figured if I take her out for a few days, maybe her top of the pecking order will change? I feel bad for little Peri, such a gorgeous partridge color, was the tiniest baby of the silkies, but (s)he's driving everyone crazy. I have another nutbar in the big girl coop, Diva, but she's not nasty, she just tends to be a little flighty.

Any advice?

My cream legbar is doing well, except shes in the bottom of the flock and gets picked on. No eggs yet. Soon I hope. I'll try and get a pic of her tomorrow, she's real pretty.
Thinking about trying to hatch more.

I'm getting old, 50# bags of feed are killing me, last month I pulled a muscle in my back, this month my shoulder. Wish they came in 25# bags. Guess I need to work out.
COSTCO has this cool fold up wagon for about $57.00. I throw everything into it and wheel it up and around to the back to the coop. It rolls well uphill and on uneven ground! (All of which describes my route to the coop) Tell me about getting old...it is starting to hit me too. (Will be....ahem...62 this fall...shhhhhhh)

Would love to have a legbar but my girls are doing so well and 5 is good for my coop size. Perhaps in the future. (sigh)
