Hello All,
I am new here. I live in Mt Vernon, about as far south as you can get in Westchester before you hit the city! I am on an obsessive fact finding mission, gathering and gathering in anticipation of getting my first chickens! i have so many questions! But I have to start somewhere, so , is anyone else this far south? where does everyone get their feed/supplies from around here?

Thanks!

Hiya Bq, I am in rockland county, almost in jersey, welcome :) you are going to find tons of info and great people here. I find most of my supplies in jersey though.

I don't live in NY but I visit Pleasant Valley (near Poughkeepsie) at least once a month. There's a poultry farm there that I want to check out one of these days when I'm there. They have ducks, geese, chickens and pheasants.

Hello-
What type of chicken do you think would be a good egg producer, take up the least amount of space, and be comfortable with westchester/nyc winters?

I have space to put a 3' x 4' coop with a run of 42 square feet. Would you feel comfortable with 3-4 birds in this space? i would also let them into my yard(which is also very small) while i am out there working, but i do not have a way to keep them out of the veggies, which is why i would want to be out there so i can hopefully chase them out of some of the spaces.

Also, do you think the birds would be comfortable in a spot without full some, and mostly shade? i think i will be cutting down a small pine that the run would go under, which would give them more light, but it would still be a mostly shade spot.
Thank you for your insights!! much appreciated.

Wecome BQ!

Shade is good. You can let them out for sun baths and they need the shade in the summer heat.
Your plan sounds good for 3 adult birds.
For cold weather and good layers think maybe easter eggers/Americana......wyndottes.......and other rose comb birds to avoid frostbite. Efficient eaters vs size is also a consideration. If you choose smaller varieties like silkies........you could then get 4 as you'd have the space.
So many choices, so little time. lol
