Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Well, I had a spectacularly shiRtty day subbing yesterday. But the high point was a great conversation with one of the school secretaries, who is a backyard chicken owner. We compared pictures, just like proud grandmas!

Pauline has been coming along beautifully over the last couple of days. She's become much more confident with her visits with the little girls. She misses them when she can't "hang out" with them. They still bully her sometimes, but it seems to be getting better. Yesterday I left them all together while I went out because everyone was so mellow (it was late in the day). Bobby had instructions to check on things and break up the hen party if it got ugly. Everything was fine and when I got home, just as it was getting dark, the little girls were roosting on a part of a ladder and Pauline was roosting right across from them on a branch. Everyone was doing the little chicken snore. It was very sweet. I moved everyone inside the henhouse, and locked Pauline up in her pen again. I didn't want to keep her loose in the henhouse with the big girls this morning, especially with the rain.

But I am encouraged that Pauline might be able to "run with" the little girls soon.

My last day of subbing at the School from, well you know....

smkchick, I'm sorry the subbing wasn't so great, but I'm delighted that Miss Pauline is doing so much better! Step by step, she's becoming a member of The Littles!

I haven't really been on in a while but I follow you guys from time to time.
I'm I'm constant amazement at my first little flock. My three Ameraucana girls began staying outside last Sunday and I went shopping, came home late and was horrified to see that it was dark and my husband had forgotten about them.
Two of my girls were doing their nervous "needy" cluck on the patio but the third girl was missing. We searched the yard and I started crying, certain that something had scooped her up and was devouring her at that very moment.
It wasn't until the other two had walked towards the coop that we saw her - sleeping - on the perch.
They had only been in the coop once and only for a few minutes! How did she know? Of course I'm a proud chicken Mama and like to think that my girls are somehow advanced, lol.

They amaze me. Each morning I wake up to soft clucking through the patio door and then when I open the shades they begin their "needy" clucks until I come out with food. I know I need to get an automatic feeder but I'm being selfish right now. They're adorable!
I've watched them eat their first bug, play leap frog, fly over each others' heads, scratch in the dirt and flop in the sun.
How could a creature other than a dog or cat be so personable, endearing and entertaining?
I'm I'm love <3

I know I've written a book here but there's NO WAY my Facebook friends would understand and like any other proud mother, I needed to gush about my babies!

I feel the same way about mine.

Carolinaisland, yes, please, gush on! Your darling girls calling for you from outside is so very sweet. They love and trust you, and what a world of good things you provide for them, the greatest among these being love.

I've created a monster! One of the little Barbu d''Anver chicks has learned that if she comes near my feet when she's sleepy, I'll pick her up and cradle her warmly and snugly into my side-flab. Now, if I'm standing outside where she is, she'll suddenly franticly fly up to my knee, cling desperately to my jeans with her feeties, and "Yeepiddy- CHEEP? Yeepiddy- CHEEP??" until I scoop her up, makes a nest for her in my hand, and gently smoosh her into my side-flab!

Bah. Power has been flickering all morning. Tv and Internet is out. Good thing most of the eggs are under broodies. I don't understand it either it's only drizzling out the storm didn't even get started yet.

Hey Christina, how are you and how you feeling? I miss are chats.
Well the chicken hat is done. I can't wait to see their faces tommorow .it is hysterical .

Just went outside to make sure the girls are OK for the night and I have never seen their run so flooded.
The dog refuses to go out and pee.
I feel bad for the girls
