Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Hi everyone. I haven't been on here in awhile. Been so busy. Anyway, My little bantam layed her first eggs last week. Still waiting for my 2 leghorns and 2 Rhode Island Reds to lay.
i am planning a short trip upstate to the Rocking Horse Ranch the week of labor day. I was wondering if any of you near the Mastic/Shirley area might be willing to help me out and look in
on my chicks. I would be willing to compensate you of course. I could probably get a neighbor to do it, but I would rather someone who knows something about chickens. I'm only going away for 3 days (2 nights) Thanks
I'll be camping at Smiths Point that week. Let me know the dates, and if I'm there, i'd be happy to check up on your girls!

howdy people!

Had the pleasure of spending some time with Roberta last weekend. So glad she made it over for a couple hours. :<) nice sharing info with other peep people.
Nothing exciting going on here. Girls faired well during the heat thankfully and today it is actually COOL and breezy. we are loving every minute of it.

MAGGIE! I missed you! I'm glad that heat wave is over. My sweat was sweating. (Plus hot flashes-man oh man!! This girl was on FI-YAH! )

Good afternoon everybody. New neighbors moved in next door to the house that's been vacant since we got our chickies. Plucky's been crowing up a storm, more and more everyday. The couple came to the fence and the woman said she grew up with chickens so it doesn't bother her in fact makes her want them again.
Not wanting to look a gift horse in the mouth does anybody know who or where a rooster would be welcome?? I checked with that farm in Green lawn but they said they are rooster full. Too bad too because several of the roosters I saw looked just like Plucky.
Please let me know.

Hello everyone,
Loretta has two rose comb RIR bantams that she got at the conference in jan. on Craigslist for $10 each. They just started Laying about two months ago. I told her I'd check with people on here.

Girls are enjoying this weather.

I had a guy call me from The Wall Street Journal in Boston.
He's doing a story about small flocks and the lack of knowledgeable vet care.
It seems I had too many chickens, and knew too much for his story

But if you have nothing to do, give him a call and chat, he seemed nice.

Good luck rehoming roosters. Lately all of mine wind up becoming dinner.
But all I need is ONE jerk to complain, and I already have one neighbor on the edge.

On a more personal note, my central A/C unit just fried. ONE month after the 10-year warranty expired.
It seems the installer did me a favor and put the in-service date as the date he STARTED the job, not when it was finished.
Ugh. On the phone forever yesterday with Trane. They sound like they will cover it.
Of course it's the biggest and most expensive unit they had available back then.
Now to see how long it will take to special order a replacement.
I hope it stays cool for the next few weeks.
Ugh, everything is getting mushy with the humidity and the windows open.
I spit out my cereal yesterday

Hey, all. I just wanted to hop onto this thread and thank everyone who helped me out a few weeks ago when I had a sick chicken. She's all better now, and no one else got sick! Scout & I thank you so much.

You could always offer to provide her with an adorable rooster of her own...

So, I brought my 6 year old daughter for ice cream at the farm down the road (they have a stand with homemade ice cream, local honey, produce, baked goods, canned goods, pastured meat, etc). So we sat under the canopy to watch the cows return from pasture. There was only one other group of people sitting there (a boy of about 11 or so and his grandparents and mom). The boy says to the adults "did you see that? what is that cow doing? He just climbed on the back of that other cow!". Of course the adults smirked, and try to deflect at which point, my darling 6 year old says "their mating, it is what they do".... I just love this kid.
