Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

I will be there from September 2nd to the 6th. How close are you to Smiths Point? I can plan morning visits, no problem at all. My older kids all sleep in when we camp, so I can come with my youngest, who is a chicken lover like me!

I'll shoot you an email after I do coop cleaning and garden weeding...I love my life!

So, I brought my 6 year old daughter for ice cream at the farm down the road (they have a stand with homemade ice cream, local honey, produce, baked goods, canned goods, pastured meat, etc). So we sat under the canopy to watch the cows return from pasture. There was only one other group of people sitting there (a boy of about 11 or so and his grandparents and mom). The boy says to the adults "did you see that? what is that cow doing? He just climbed on the back of that other cow!". Of course the adults smirked, and try to deflect at which point, my darling 6 year old says "their mating, it is what they do".... I just love this kid.

It's funny how our children see it as a matter of fact. My kids are the same-I used to breed dogs. My mother would have been horrified.

Exhausted. Spent the day shopping for chicken food, cleaning the coop and brooders.
Ugh. Who needs a gym? Just lift bags of feed all day lol. The little chicks learned real FAST, when a human comes outside run to them real fast and you get yummy's. I'm waiting for them to learn to knock on the back door for treats like some of the big girls do.

I had a guy call me from The Wall Street Journal in Boston. He's doing a story about small flocks and the lack of knowledgeable vet care. It seems I had too many chickens, and knew too much for his story

But if you have nothing to do, give him a call and chat, he seemed nice. Jon Kamp, 617-654-6728 [email protected] Good luck rehoming roosters. Lately all of mine wind up becoming dinner. But all I need is ONE jerk to complain, and I already have one neighbor on the edge. On a more personal note, my central A/C unit just fried. ONE month after the 10-year warranty expired. It seems the installer did me a favor and put the in-service date as the date he STARTED the job, not when it was finished. Ugh. On the phone forever yesterday with Trane. They sound like they will cover it. Of course it's the biggest and most expensive unit they had available back then. Now to see how long it will take to special order a replacement. I hope it stays cool for the next few weeks. Ugh, everything is getting mushy with the humidity and the windows open. I spit out my cereal yesterday

That's so crazy. They want someone who doesn't know a lot about chickens for a news story lmao.

Omg. My entire flock is missing !!!
Except my silkie and her 2 CL chicks that are in a puppy play pen, and 2 chicks I have inside in a brooder.
8 hens and 4 chicks gone. Don't know how they got out of the fence. OMG :(

Found my flock. Neighbors think I'm crazy. Was walking down the block shaking a bag of meal worms followed by a line of chickens. UGH. Sealed up the hole they got out of. Everyone's home safe. I need a drink.

Hi all! Sorry I've been awol for so long. I seem to be spending more time with the ipad, which is great for reading, but no so much for typing. Also, I've been busy with some new students. (Thank you God)

We all weathered the heat here okay, although it was touch and go for a while. I filled the steel waterers with ice and put one in the coop to provide a little coolth.

I've been getting between 4-6 eggs a day from 9 hens. I suspect hiding (although I haven't discovered where) or eating (which I have seen some evidence of). The problem is, if I lock them up to stop the hiding, it will increase the eating. Arrrgh!!

And, sorry to say, I have to rehome Lola, my Buff Orpington. She's becoming too dominant and I'm worried about the bantams. She's a beauty, but the flock dynamic is not good now. I think she thinks she's the rooster! So if anyone here wants a gorgeous blonde named Lola, let me know. I'll be happy to drop her off.

Whoever said that silkies are mythical beings, I agree. Pauline looks like something from another planet. She's a real joy. I love to watch her and Pearl run around. It's hilarious! I should get off my fat arse and take some pics.

I still want a blue egg layer, if anyone knows of someone who has chickies...

Good memory, Rosie. It was me with the crocheted chick sling. And it was Lavinia who was my bosom buddy.
