B.Flash :

Al,
Are you in Western or Eastern Putnam?
I'm glad to see this thread.
We're in Eastern Putnam and have been getting feed from the new TSC in Patterson, but there are plenty of Agways and such around.
I would love to get 4-6 more chicks, but don't want to mail-order a "minimum".
Specifically, I would love to get some young B.O's and maybe an EE or two.

Got any local leads?

All the way east in Brewster. We must be close to each other. Right now we are getting our feed from Bennie's in Bedford. Got some from the Agway in Danbury in the beginning and the TSC.

Figuring out today where to put the nesting boxes. The girls are getting close to POL and I want to be prepared.

As far as the local leads, I don't have any. Did you try http://www.mypetchicken.com/ . I think they are in Norwalk Ct. They have low minimums too.

Be patient it's well worth it!
This egg might be from one of the gals I hatched out. It's too dark/big for the silkie.
Phew, they will finally be earning their keep. A friend of mine has been keeping me in fresh eggs for a while now. I'll finally have some of my own.

Just finished installing the nesting boxes. One above the other right inside the people door. Put 2 golf balls in each and they are checking them out already. Was going to put an outside one on but I can't get mentally up for the additional labor.

A few fireworks went off and the girls ran into the coop. The dogs headed for the bedrooms. Going to be a long and interesting night.

I've got to put some pics up sometime. Maybe today if I get the ambition.

Maggie, the wait is killing us. Our luck we'll be waiting for months. Not much we can do about it though. They are on their own schedule. Some are maturing faster than others and I think the amber links are going to lay first. Their wattles are growing rapidly and their getting red combs and faces too. Can't wait to get that first fruit of our labors. Well, at least the chicken's labor. Will be nice what they go on auto lay. Now if we can figure out how to get milk and Italian bread that easily we would have it made.

Everyone have a great 4th. Hope it is one of the best for you and your families.

Hi Al and everyone,

Al, thanks for your welcome and the link. I am from Brooklyn, NY. I live in an apartment and keep hens on my roof-top garden. I have 2 Buff Orpingtons, 4 Golden Buffs, 1 Rhode Island Red, 2 Black Australorps, and 3 Barred Rocks. They are 8 weeks old. I can't wait to have eggs from them. I am also trying to sell some of them and cutting down to 6 as I am going to have 2 of each golden laced, silver laced, Columbian Wyandottes and Delawares coming in early August.

One problem I am facing is that one of my hens (I ordered all females) seems to be a cockerel and I need to figure out what to do before he start to crow.

I feed them organic soy-free grower (buy online) and they love vegetables from my garden. I am hoping to join some other chicken keepers in my area later, so we can buy feed together and cut down shipping cost.

Hi Maggie,

Do you know that if CG Feeds carry wheat bran or rice bran? If they do, next time when you go to there, can you just find out the price for me? Thanks a lot! I want to use them for making bokashi.
