DEFINITLEY =] I live in Orange county, by Port jervis....

Suzannne, Glad to see the chicks have arrived safe and sound.

Maggie, nice to hear from you again. Sorry about your loss.

Al, I'm ready for 90 on Monday.

OK well my sexing of day old chicks is not 100%. My youngest son and my wife have both heard some beginnings of crowing coming from the brooder coop. If there are any roos in there would anyone be interested in adopting a cute BO roo?

Heather, your daughters are beautiful. I love how gentle they are with the chicks. Nothing I love more than well-behaved children!

Donna, I am in LOVE with Mrs. Cuddlesworth. I love the way she's looking at her new babies. What a fantastic hen. She deserves to be memorialized in print!

Went out East this morning to the Glass Greenhouse. Bought veggie plants for the (hopefully) chicken-proof garden and flowers for the front. Then lunch with an old friend.

While I was out spending money and having fun, Bobby was hard at work on the coop. The paneling is all done. We're heading out to buy the exterior tongue in groove cedar planking. Roofing shingles, too, I hope. Can't wait to get it done!!!

My 3 girls and 3 foster chicks are all doing well. Getting bigger already. I swear you can see them growing...

Planning to candle hatching eggs soon just to see what, if anything is happening. Advice? Roberta??

Al, I have 4 words for you: DO IT!! DO IT!!

I candle my eggs in the laundry room, it needs to be pitch black for the best results.
If you don't have the right tool, a high powered flashlight and a paper towel roll squished down will work.
I usually don't do until at least after a week. Sometimes I don't do it at all, unless I really need the room.
The more you handle them, the more of a risk of dirty hand germs, or dropping them (yes, I have).
They are a little weird looking until about 2 weeks, then you can see the little wormy looking thing wiggle around in the light.
Now that's the cool part!

I made a candler from a can light and a piece of cardboard. The plan was on BYC. Took all of 5 minutes. I thought I'd wait til a week, but if there's nothing to see, I'll wait til 2 weeks. I can never see what's going on. I'd make a lousy radiologist.

It's not like I need the room or anything. Was just going to check it out.

We're almost ready to move the girls in! Tomorrow while I'm at work Bobby's going to HD for the supplies for the roof and run. Can't wait to have it all done.

Oh yeah. And Bobby's friend isn't returning his calls, so it looks like I'm going to have 3 extra chicks. 1 BO, 1 BR and 1 EE. Drat!

NICE coop! I may have somebody for the EE....

That's funny. The EE was the one I was thinking of keeping! She has interesting coloring. But I'll let her go - no room at the inn.

I'm really ticked that I have to go to work today. I got used to sitting around on my expanding butt. So much I want to do today - gardening, coop stuff, etc., etc. Working is starting to get in the way.

(Remind me I said this when I'm unemployed in 3 months!)

Greetings lower New Yorkers

I'm in Orange County. I hope to have a coop ready, with a secured run, by late summer but most likely the early fall. I was thiking of picking up a few Barred Rocks, a couple of Golden Comets and maybe an Americauna. Can anybody tell me how these fair in our climate? Also, how "needy" are they? Working full time I want to make sure I can give them what they need while I'm out.

-Mike
