Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

My Appen. Spitz. Eggs have shipped. :D
My cream legbars have not. :(
Hopefully they will ship tomorrow. Want to set them together.
I have too many staggered hatches.

I'm going to have eggs hatching every week for a month.
What have I done to myself. It's more the brooder thing
that I'm worried about. I don't want more than 2 brooders
so I hope I can mix some age grps together.

Hi all,

I live in the northeastern part of Queens, NY and am expecting my first batch of 15 assorted chicks tomorrow (pesky mail-order minimums.. hope I'm not in over my head)! I've been doing a lot of research these past few weeks and have got the brooder set up and waiting. Just need to work on building/finding a coop, gotta find time these next few weekends to do it before they're all grown up.

From what I've read so far, there are feed stores in Hicksville and Riverhead, would anyone happen to know of any closer ones in Nassau? The drive to Hicksville isn't too bad, about 25 minutes, but I don't have much going on to justify the drive/gas though I just might bite the bullet given how expensive shipping is. Also recommendations on which brand would be great! I've got a 5lb bag of chick starter on hand at the moment, and would ideally like a local supplier to go to instead of ordering online.

Looking forward to reading more about everyone and their chickens!

Emily

Hello and welcome to all the new folks! I'm Heather, and I'm in lower Westchester. I may or may not be legal here so I only have three big hens and two babies in the brooder. Roberta, baby cinnamon chipmunk is doing very well, thank you again! I have a gift for you, I hope we can meet up in NJ at the fair. I'm going to a childrens book author group on Thursday night where I'll be trying to shop my little tale of the Fairy Chicken Godmother. As the one that started the whole FCG thing I hope you arent too mad at me! I can still change her name if you like.

Suzanne I think it's so cool that Clara is reacting that way to the babies! I wonder if she'll mommy them? You should video her watching the eggs hatch and put it on YouTube. I can't believe they're hatching already either.

I'm up to my neck in the usual colds and craziness and were throwing s Derby Day party on Sat so I'll check in on Sunday. Just hope the weather is nice enough to clean the coop tomorrow.

Hi Emily!! Welcome!

You're going to need a lot more than 5lbs of chick feed if you have 15chicks coming. As far as what brand to get, you have to decide if having organic chickens from the start is important to you. Then decide if you want to give them medicated feed or plain. I have to drive pretty far to get anything so I tend to stock up as much as I can when I get to the feed store. I store it in a galvanized garbage can from HD in the garage to keep it from getting moldy and attracting rodents. You might also want to stock up on wood shavings, they are way cheaper from the feed store than the pet store.

Hi Emily, WELLCOME.

I have a feed store 5 minutes from me in Shirley
Shirley feed on montauk hwy

I used manapro medicated starter, I had issues
with my first batch of shipped chicks so the medicated
was needed. The chicks I'm hatching my self I'm not
gonna use medicated unless I see bloody poop.
My girls ,9 weeks, are now in developer feed. They
only had one kind, Blue seal, so that's what I got.
They do have organic layer though, so I guess I'll switch
to that in a few months. Agway in river head has a much
bigger selection, but Shirley feed is close to me.
I don't know any feed stores in queens, but some others
on here probably do. At least the feed was cheep. $17 for
50#., and $7 for a giant bundle of pine shavings.

I candled (again) tonight.
6 orps are developing :D one clear,
one ring of death. Day 8 I think.

I did the Ameracaunas too even though
Its like 2 1/2 days. Hehe
One is clear. One I can't see through the
shell. It's like opaque turquoise. 5, I think
I see development, but it's so early yet
I can't be sure.

I didn't take them out of the incubator to
do it, just lit them up in place. Next time
Day 14 orps Day 7 amer. I'll take them out
and do a good job.

I hope to see some fuzzy lavender pics tomorrow.

You and me both! I got up early to do a lesson plan for today and one egg has a significant hole with cracking all around. The others haven't changed. I'm convinced I did something to kill them all. When we hatched duck eggs in my classroom they were handled, candled and taken out of the incubator a lot and they all hatched. But with this hatch, I'm completely paranoid. Not too mention walking a fine line at work...

Welcome Emily and good morning everyone Has anyone ever gone to the NJ show before? If so whats it like. Can't sleep so I'm playing around on BYC. Already have 2 PMs in to people with chicks. One in Mass. for Salmon fav. chicks and one in Cal. for funky polish chicks. The Polish won't be ready til the middle of May .Do you think it's too late to have them mailed due to the heat ? I only have had eggs shipped in the Fall. With the Polish you need to buy 6 Just my luck I would end up with all roosters again.Does anyone know how early you can tell a pullet from a rooster with the Salmon Favs?I can't believe I'm thinking of this.I should just be happy living vicariously through you guys.

Be careful what you wish for. I'm up to sitting next to an incubator that's doing NOTHING!! Not a life you want to live vicariously.

Emily, welcome! Check with the Hicksville Agway. I know they deliver out here, so Queens might not be too much of a stretch. The store itself isn't much. More of a depot for shipping items/feeds, etc.

Also, check with your local pet store. More and more of them are carrying chicken supplies. What area of Queens are you in? I'm in Huntington. I usually get my feed at the Riverhead Agway, but I'm out there on a regular basis anyway.

Lots of great people here. Some with some serious chicken addiction problems - that would be me!

Welcome to the thread, Emily.
We have a few upstaters, and Staten Island as well.
Someone will give you advice. If you read back a few pages, there's a Newsday article with Carolyn in Freeport.
And a few months ago, there was talk of a feed supply smack in the city. Chicken Al should know where.
Roberta.
