Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Hi all,

I live in the northeastern part of Queens, NY and am expecting my first batch of 15 assorted chicks tomorrow (pesky mail-order minimums.. hope I'm not in over my head)! I've been doing a lot of research these past few weeks and have got the brooder set up and waiting. Just need to work on building/finding a coop, gotta find time these next few weekends to do it before they're all grown up.

From what I've read so far, there are feed stores in Hicksville and Riverhead, would anyone happen to know of any closer ones in Nassau? The drive to Hicksville isn't too bad, about 25 minutes, but I don't have much going on to justify the drive/gas though I just might bite the bullet given how expensive shipping is. Also recommendations on which brand would be great! I've got a 5lb bag of chick starter on hand at the moment, and would ideally like a local supplier to go to instead of ordering online.

Looking forward to reading more about everyone and their chickens!

Emily

Hi Emily, and welcome to the thread. Always glad to have another chicken lover on board.

I looked this morning for a link to Megan, who is a distributor for Countryside Organics feed. She is in Brooklyn, but was having the feed available for pick up in Queens at a market. This was back in January, so I'm not too sure if it is still done that way.

Here is the link for the Market which is in Long Island City. If you contact them they may be able to give you other info on feed suppliers. http://www.brooklyngrangefarm.com/markets/

This is Megan's email. She is the local distributor in Brooklyn. [email protected]

Hope this helps. And again, welcome.

Welcome to the thread, Emily.
We have a few upstaters, and Staten Island as well.
Someone will give you advice. If you read back a few pages, there's a Newsday article with Carolyn in Freeport.
And a few months ago, there was talk of a feed supply smack in the city. Chicken Al should know where.
Roberta.

There's also places on Staten Island, but I don't expect that would be convenient for you either

Hi Emily, call Agway in Hicksville, they deliver and you never know, maybe they can combine the trip to you on one of their stops. They may make deliveries to the horse race tracks, and horse barns. Worth a call.

Emily, a 5 lb bag will go fast with the chicks, so you better look into getting more soon. :)

Okay, so I woke up at 4:25 and couldn't get back to sleep. Watched the eggs and wrote out a plan for my sub for today.

I went back to bed for awhile then got up and checked on the egg that cracked. He/she was making slow progress so I went downstairs to fold some laundry. You guessed it. He/she hatched while I was in the basement.

But the other eggs are rolling around and I'm hoping Numero Uno is spurring them on. Last night I brought the chicks in to sit near the incubator and cheep like little chicken cheerleaders.

Here's my first baby:

(Okay, now would be a good time to fold laundry)

Congrats on your babies!

And a big thank you to everyone for the friendly wishes and advice! I've decided that since I already took the day off, I'm going to make the drive to Hicksville in a bit to get more supplies. Luckily for me all the chicks arrived happy and healthy and they even threw in an extra 2. They're rather vocal now so I'm a little worried, the brooder temp is at about 95, and they seem to be ignoring the water despite my attempts to "teach" them to drink
