The 3 under the broody are doing really well so far, all have little chicken embryos wiggling away and are due on the 8th... I haven't candled the other 3 (under the nearly naked broody) yet, but will keep everyone updated!Aww, bless her heart, as my Brit friends would say. Makes me wish I could knit her a sweater! I have one that goes broody-ish daily until I take the eggs out. Then she gives up. I think she's just being a diva, her name is J.Lo after all!
How are the eggs you are incubating under a broody?
You and I have very similar chicken breed preferences. I was going to order appen spitz this year along with legbars polish and a handful of other unusual looking breeds. Again, if you get a roo I will take a pair and return eggs for hatching. My Appen. Spitz. Eggs have shipped.![]()
My cream legbars have not.![]()
Hopefully they will ship tomorrow. Want to set them together.
I have too many staggered hatches.
I'm going to have eggs hatching every week for a month.
What have I done to myself. It's more the brooder thing
that I'm worried about. I don't want more than 2 brooders
so I hope I can mix some age grps together.
Salmon fav hens and roos have very different color patterns. The hens should come in all wheaten and salmon, the roos get a lot of black on them. That said, I had a chick that I posted on BYC for opinion and everyone voted roo, so we named it Charlie. Let's just say that not only is Charlie NOT a roo, Charlie is my current broody. So, it kind of depends on if you have hatchery or breeder/show quality on them. The breeder/show quality is more likely to color true vs the larger amount of "smuttyness" on the hatchery quality birds.Welcome Emily and good morning everyone Has anyone ever gone to the NJ show before? If so whats it like. Can't sleep so I'm playing around on BYC. Already have 2 PMs in to people with chicks. One in Mass. for Salmon fav. chicks and one in Cal. for funky polish chicks. The Polish won't be ready til the middle of May .Do you think it's too late to have them mailed due to the heat ? I only have had eggs shipped in the Fall. With the Polish you need to buy 6 Just my luck I would end up with all roosters again.Does anyone know how early you can tell a pullet from a rooster with the Salmon Favs?I can't believe I'm thinking of this.I should just be happy living vicariously through you guys.
All broodies do that to help eggs stay warm...So, as if it isn't bad enough that I had to put saddles on nearly all of my hens because the roos (2 now rehomed) have the backs of 5 or so of my girls completely stripped of feathers, I was checking under one of my broodies today and she has pulled out all of her belly feathers too! Poor, poor, homely looking thing. She is so fierce on those eggs too that she trys to fluff up but all she has left are her wings, neck/upper back and side feathers and a bit on her chest. I will have to try to get a pic of this for your entertainment.
Broody must be brought by a contagion though. I have 6/22 trying to go broody on me. Anyone have any eggs they want cooked?

I was at the NJ show last year and had a blast. Lots of birds, fun auction, lots of sale cages, fun people, etc... as I have posted before, there is a lot going on at the fairgrounds that day too, so more than just the show: farmers market, fishing derby, pet expo, horseshow, and rodeo... I can't wait.
