Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

We did some of the finishing touches to the coop today, plus I cleaned up the yard and finished planting the vegetable garden. Here's what the coop looks like at this point:

I still have to paint the door (dark green, which is what my house has) and add the sign I'm making. The plants in the window boxes are greens for the girls.

We've already decided to add another 80 sq. ft. to the run on the left. We're going to go around the corner and over 10 ft. or so. There's a birdbath/fountain in the corner now (not hooked up) and I think we're going to keep it in the run.

While we were at Home Depot getting 2x4s to start the run expansion, I left Lavinia in the brooder with the big chicks. The were actually dust-bathing in the shavings and letting her participate. When I got home they were all up on their "training roost", including Little Miss Lavinia. Too cute for words!
WOW!!! That looks fantastic! Your girls are going to love that hen house!! My husband and sons have been working all day on clearing the area where my coop will be. I'm dancing on air I'm so happy! It won't be half as nice as yours, but if I built one like that, I'd be obligated to get ALOT more chickens. Darned chicken math!!

Here's the progress made today.

The pen is 10x10.7 the house, once expanded will go in the left corner of the pen. The wire is down on the bottom, wrapped around the railroad ties and screwed into place. They're going to build the walls then put them up. You should see how much overgrowth and brush they had to get out of there!!

Thanks for the compliments. Once I looked at the coops on the BYC coop thread, I had to go whole hog on this. It's right on my patio, so I wanted something I could stand looking at!

I love to see the work you're doing on your coop. I'm sorry we didn't make our run bigger from the start. I LOVE the house with the shingles and everything. And the best part is your husband and sons working together! We had a good time doing this project together.

wow suzane, Your coop has come a long way =] Congrats.. how do the birds like it?

The first night we locked them out of the old coop, we didn't know what to expect, but they went right in and made themselves at home. There are shelves at window level. I think they enjoy looking out. Tonight when we came home from dinner, they were just settling in for the night, but when they saw us coming into the yard, they came back out. Always looking for treats.
