Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Wow, you are up early, 6:00 is my normal waking time. 3:30 is a bit too early for me.

I know poison will work if I shove it down the holes but having my dogs eat it is another fear. I would go crazy if they were harmed in any way. We had poison in the large black traps and the hens must have tossed the box around and got some poison out, I found little bits scattered all around their run one day.

Before we put poison out last year, we used to have chipmunks and now the chipmunks are gone. I have to wonder if they ate it. Probably. I used to love seeing the chipmunks.

We got filmed to be part of an animal series on rats, but our segment never aired. They weren't able to film the rats at all and guess we weren't exciting enough for them. Now it seems we are overrun. These were the guys who came to our house. The film crew was here for about 2 months on and off. http://animal.discovery.com/tv/rat-busters-nyc/about-the-show.html

Donna, nothing to do with rats, but I found stepping stones for my garden on craigslist. Going to pick them up tonight. Craigslist rocks!!

How cool is that!! Well, there's not much on Long Island that can rival what lives in the subways of manhattan!! Chipmunks are adorable-but also destructive. the ones in my yard eat all my bulbs (sharing with the squirrels) and then they tried to commit suicide in my pond-so I'd have to fish them out and save them. (talk about adding insult to injury-I just couldn't allow the little bitty things to drown!) We finally filled in the pond after a mass Jonestown-type of suicide. It was awful.

Poison is a scary thing. Maybe a trap and then kill them in the trap? If it's a small trap, nothing big can get in, and you can just leave poison inside the trap (away from the chickens!)

I'm racking my feeble brain for a helpful solution!

Hi littlecritters (Tina), and welcome. I think you are going to like everyone here. This is a great bunch of really funny, but very helpful, chicken addicts.

Poison is the best way to get the rats under control. They hoard the blocks and it wipes out the family of them. I did see an electric mouse trap that uses batteries and juices the mouse like a stun gun, but kills them. It is reusable and looks like a neat thing. I would guess they make something similar for rats.

It's called the Rat Zapper. I have one. The problem with it if it gets wet or muddy inside, it kills the batteries.
It's a little tunnel kind of thing, you put the bait in the back, and he has to step into it, but the floor is metal, and OOPS zzzzzipp. Fried rat.

Hey, Caleb. You could start a nice little job of exterminating chicken vermin. A box of 22s and you're all set.

Back when I lived in Manhatten, The superindtendents(?) would pay me and my buddy 1$ for every rat xD we would set up in the back of a pickup truck, throw some chicken liver down, and just wait... easily racked up 50$ a night xD Those rats were scary too... Like mutant, science experiment ,beast type rats that wouldve have eaten my dogs xD
