Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Here's the thing about people that abuse animals and kids in general: they are dumbasses and you can't really argue with stupid or crazy.

After volunteering with rescue groups for animals all my life and having many friends who care for children at risk in one capacity or another I think I have become a little cynical. I have had cable guys tell me stories about going into big mansions and finding filthy dogs locked in the basement covered in their own excrement, and similar stories in other types of housing but the filthy, unfed animals are children. You start to wonder where to draw the line. I still get angry about people that abuse innocents but I can't take risks like breaking windows that might cause me to be put in jail and harm my own children and animals that depend on me to be there every day.

So I leave a note on a windshield, I notify the police and I tell every store within walking distance the license plate number of the vehicle. Sometimes, very rarely, it is just ignorance and you can fix it right away. Sometimes it is mental illness or drug abuse that causes people to make bad decisions. And sometimes it is just pure selfishness, in which case public humiliation seems to work better than anything else, hence the, "I'm going to take your picture and make sure you're on Eyewitness News tonight, jackass!" But if it is pure evil you really don't want to be on these people's target list and put yourself in harm's way, which is why you need to involve police.

I once rescued a dog from the side of the Bronx River Parkway, brought it to the police and waited with them until the owner came to pick it up. This dog was terrified and lost, but it trusted me and knew I was trying to help it. Did the owner express thanks and gratitude? No, he yelled at his dumb dog for running away again and peeled off without so much as a "Thanks!" It kinda dawned on me that I basically risked my life to save this dog only to put it back in the hands of the idiot that let it get into danger in the first place. Knowing all that I'd probably still do it, because I am a Weenie that feeds doomed foxes bologna. ;) I'm just not sure I'd want to have broken his window and possibly gotten shot for it.

Ah who am I kidding, I'm a New Yorker, I'd be the first one to mouth off and do what it took to save a child or an animal.

Bobby took his friend to the doctor this morning, and my car's in the shop, so I'm stuck home. Getting a lot done, though. Cleaning up, trying to assimilate this year's boxes of school stuff into the other boxes of school stuff. Still can't find my transcripts for my meeting tomorrow though.

I did get "my room" dechickened though. It's a little room/office off the bedroom. Bobby finished it for me and it's great! But I've had all kinds of chicken stuff in there and needed to get it more organized. I'm a long way from organized, but I'll take "more" for now.

I let the big girls and the little girls out to free range. It's such a beautiful day! I'm not letting the babies out again until they're too big to go under the fence.

Hi everyone.
I haven't been on in a few, been busy with house
and animals (old folks away on vacation ) I have
a bunch of posts to catch up on. My chicken coop
is going to be delivered thurs or Fri. Woot! I need
it badly. The chicks are all ready to go outside.
They are driving me crazy. They keep escaping
the brooders and wander around exploring and
pooping all over the house. Jersy Hen is adopting
4 chicks from me and I sent an email to my farm
CSA asking if they would take 7 more. That will
leave me with 11 and my brother might take 3.
So hard to give any up but I know they will be well
cared for. I pray the farm takes them that way I
can visit them and see them grow up. I really really
don't want to cull the Roos. The 2 orp Roos are so
sweet they even cuddle with me. Maybe it's just
because they are young, but I can't see them ever
getting mean.

I am little Miss "I heart Veggies" and even I can't stand wheat grass. It is pure nasty evilness in a shot glass, blah....
It's bad, right? Well, I do admit it does seem to have something in it that makes me feel good. I like veggies, I'll drink any ground up concoction of veggies, fruits, herbs, grains-you name it. It tastes foul, but an ounce is 3 gulps and that I can live with.

Do you have a juicer? I'm thinking about the kitchen Ninja system thingamabob with all the attachments. I like juices and if I can make some good tasting stuff that's secretly healthy for the kids...seems worth the money. The kids all adore vegetables and fruits, so I don't really worry TOO much, but a nice cold juice slushy would probably make them really happy.

If you have one, which, and how good is it?

I've been doing the same thing around here. trying to get rid of loads of stuff I have no idea why I've kept. I'm going to empty the attic and go through all that stuff too. I've got loads of clothing that is too small for my youngest, and since he's the youngest in the family and of all my friends kids too, it's time to get rid of it all.

Yard Sale! Kids clothes sell really well and if you make a coupla bucks, so much the better. You could buy more chickens!

I joined Groupon and they have a juicer for $49. Here's what it says: Emson Big Boss Juicer A 700-watt juicer pulverizes whole or chopped fruits and veggies, separating juice from pulp with a superfine stainless-steel filter. It's regularly $130. Here's the link: http://www.groupon.com/deals/gg-big...=body&d=gg-big-boss-juicer&p=10&c=deal_button

I thought about getting it and forcing myself to start drinking juices, but I'm not a juicer type.

Jeez, I'm long winded. Sorry. I just finished cleaning the girls and I'm itchy and scratchy from hay in my bra. :gig

I started something new this weekend. "Wheatgrass juice" my daughter tried it at the local hippy joint and said it's great. Well, it tastes like lawnmower clippings mixed with poop, but I guess I feel healthier. Must be the poop. Anyone else try this stuff? I'm not normally into drinking stuff that tastes like yard, but she insisted, and I'll let you know at the end of the trial period...when I finally throw up from the taste....

I LOVE shots of wheatgrass juice. It's not supposed to taste icky...supposed to have a sweetness to it. But, it's hard to find good quality wheatgrass at a juice bar..which is why I rarely drink it. If you were to try growing and juicing wheatgrass, it requires a special type of juicer. I have a Champion juicer for my regular "juices" ( spinach, carrots, celery, kale, apples etc)., but it doesn't work for wheatgrass. Juicing is extremely healthy and surprisingly tasty too!

You are a true New Yorker and a very nice person. I've lived my own way..... involved as you seem to be.....and I have never regretted being exactly who I am and where I came from.
New York ROCKS!
I am so gentle and by nature not aggressive at all.....I try to save anything and everything from lady bugs to spiders and then some. But unfortunately cynical is how I find myself at times as I grow older. but I don't wanna give in ya know?

Never give in to cynical.

Okay, I think the roo is starting to try crowing. Isn't 4-1/2 weeks a little early for that?

Just came back from the St. Vincent dePaul Furniture Thrift Store where I picked up the perfect little solid mahogany bookcase for my little room. Only $62. Love that place!

My car is all fixed. Apparently the a/c filters, etc. were so clogged, the condensation was dripping into the cabin. Bobby noticed the musty smell first, otherwise we wouldn't have caught it for awhile. As it is, the floor mats/carpeting is all wet. No wonder my hair was getting curly every time I drove somewhere...
