Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Sounds like we are "hatching" a good plan.

Roberta, before you rehome any roosters, can you let us know? Tina
That first pic of the Paint needs a home. I have two and they keep fighting.
Every time I look at him, he has a mouthful of white fuzz from his brother.
So I have named him Brutus. I can meet you when I do the trip to Maggies....
His b-day is Jan 24, so he still has some growing up to do.
And it sounds like I have another blue boy, he just started crowing.
Ugh. Gotta look up his b-day.

Suzanne, I think a trip together would be fun.
If I put the seats back in my car, Jeanette can fit, too.
I still need to vaccuum out all the wood chips from the last show.

I also have a white girl, Brutus's sister.
She is supposed to be paint, but never grew any spots....

She can be loaned out. Still hasn't layed any eggs yet.

Just got home from my trip to NJ, brought Jersy Hen her
new babies. My little ones are feasting on their treats, thanks!
Wow I love tractor supply, so many different brands of feed.
My mom insisted on buying a 50# bag of cracked corn. I told
her its like ice cream to chickens and not to over do it, haha
I know she's gonna give them too much. Oh well I'm gonna
have fat spoiled rotten birds.

I give mine 75 oats/25 corn. I figure the eggs will have less cholesterol that way.

Remind mom that corn makes the chickens burn more carbs creating heat......great in the winter to help keep them warm but not so in hot weather cause it can overheat them.. Better off with oats. :)

Hmmmmm......what a tempting thought!

Exactly........if i CAN ADOPT A ROO IF EVEN FOR A SHORT TIME i'd incubate eggs not a problem., Opps sorry bout those caps.

I just hate parting with roos. But I can do when necessary to a semi local guy who loves roos. He has my last  2 turkens and is hatching their eggs as of last mweek.. Getting turkens ...4 outa 5....and I am SO JEALOUS! I LOVE show girls and turkens.

Mags, I'm reading your posts and I gotta ask, is there a chicken out there you don't love? Hee hee...

:p

Maybe we could start a thread: what breed wouldn't you keep? For me, I couldn't keep those Cornish x White Rock meat birds, they'd make me too sad to see how unnatural they are. Plus the naked necks don't really appeal to me.

LOL....I am a true chicken nerd. I don't particulary care for leghorns and other flighty skittish breeds. I like them calm, gentle and funky looking.
I agree with you on the cornish.op hats, NNs and I love my wyandotte and cochin.

Hmmmmmm..... silkies, polish, NN/showgirls....cochins, wyndottes and EEs are at the top of my list so far.I've had quite a number of breeds pass through my hands and these above are what I consider curious/people friendly and very calm yard birds.Although polish can be total air heads.

Now that I have 5 marans peeps we'll see how they fair.I'd like next to try brahmas.......and speckled sussex. Geez, who am i kidding. I just love them all but the meaties. I can't look them in the eye. I am a hypocrite. I let others do the dirty work and then enjoy the spoils.

Well it's Saturday and promising to be muggy n hot here. I hope for rain so I don't have to water for an hour.

I have a zuccini riot on my hands. I am learning tons of ways to use them up in recipees.com. love that site!
The zuc casserold dish I made is a real keeper and a great starting place to add additional ingredients like diced chicken, ham etc.

Next I am going to process them up just like sweet n sour pickles.Add a little sweet onion and red peppers and voila! Great side dish all winter long.

I have comfry coming outta my ears. What to DO with that???? My chickens won't eat it sadly enough.
