Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Karen, Hugs. I know how you feel.

The vet said not Mareks.
I have contacted Cornell to see if I can get some testing done.
She is fine, but starting to lose a little weight, so I ordered a gavage tube feeding kit.
Crap, I needed it anyways. Just want to keep her alive in case they need her that way to test before they kill her.

Yes! We will be at the Northeast Poultry Congress show in January.
And we plan on hatching out a crapload of chicks to sell there.
My Blue Silkie cockerel got a blue ribbon there last year!

And anybody that wants eggs just to hatch, don't spend money if you don't mind mutts.
I got plenty!

Roberta check out the cross beak thread for feeding tips

Anyways I figure any hatched now could start
Laying fertile eggs in the sping.
I'm going a bit nuts today. My sisters 20 yr old
suicidal son is missing along with a ton of pills.
My sister thinks he is dead even though he hasnt
been found yet. I can't deal with this so I have
been buying hatching eggs. Good thing for me
hatching eggs are my drug of choice. Ugh.

I am so sorry to hear about your missing nephew. My prayers are with you and your family. .

Roberta, I just remembered that Cornell has a clinic and you can request an emergency appointment. I called them this past summer, regarding the silkie hens we had at the time. They were extremely helpful and did a phone consult at no charge.

How are you doing with your silkies?

Karen, I will pray for your nephew, your sister, you and your family.  Things are so hard for young people today.  It breaks my heart.

Carol, I went to Springfield last year to meet up with Roberta.  It was my first poultry show and a blast.  I've never (before or since) seen so many chickens in one place!  Count me in.

We had a great time at Golden Nugget again today.  So much so that we decided to forgo New Hope this trip.  Next time we'll go to New Hope on Saturday and Lambertville on Sunday.  We made out like bandits at the Flea Market.  Bobby ended up with 6 walking sticks and we got a solid cedar trunk for $20.

It made up for the latest round of family discussions via email about my mother's financial situation.

And when we got home, Lola (my BO) laid her first egg.  That's the first egg from the middle group of girls - Lola, Blanche, Mabel and Lavinia.

:hugs to all my  BYC friends!

Thank you do much

How are you doing with your silkies?

Right now, we have 3 little roos who are enjoying having crowing contests...and we have two little girls. They are in the 4-5 month old range and are breeder quality but probably not show quality. We can't keep all these boys, but are hanging onto them a bit longer. Since I have already rehomed 4 out of the 9 original chicks...Lindsey would be crushed if I got rid of her 3 boys right now and we went down to only 2 silkies.

I'm hoping to receive replacements this fall for the hens we purchased this summer. I'm reaching out to the breeder this week to see if she has something suitable for us. Please keep your fingers and toes crossed! Lindsey has been really great about waiting...

Can you bring chicks on a plane? How about checking the with your bags?

No, I tried to do that last week. Wanted to bring some birds home from out of state. The only animals allowed in the cabin are cats and dogs. No animals can be checked with the baggage as cargo.
:(

Today I was high on LIFE!
I went less than 1 hour away to a workiong farm ion Lakewood NJ with a animal/chicken buddy.
Good grief it would take me an hour to type what I found and saw there. My little dream place. From Emus to sheep and all inbe-tween.
3 hours later....yes 3 hours of the nicest one on one tour ....I came home with a beautiful Lav. Orp pullet(my choice of 2 troughs of 6-10 week olds) and feathers from every pea hen, rare pheasant, turkey and chicken I could find on the ground or buy. I will post the p[lace in a seperate message for ypour future reference.
6 mind you.....6 huge incubators for hatching eggs....eggs for sale of the different breeds for pick-up only...... and no hatchery stock at all. Nice fat healthy birds and just a joy for me to visit.
Chicken crack.....I was both overwhelmed and over joyed.

Shusters Farm. I used to live down there and it is was right by the place I used to clean stalls and herd horse turd to ride for free. Amazing.............absolutely a day trip for a Sunday(the ONLY day for tours) where you can pick them out and buy should you choose to. He has a buildong just for peeps in brooders.
On BYC and ebay as well. He mcares for his animals....really cares. Impressive.....and the care and attention was what will make me go back and back. No more shipped eggs for me!
He will hatch out egg breeds if requested, straight run but not in tiny numbers. He has those 350 count incubators and 6 of them.
3 generationson this farm and will take all my pure roos from now on should I need rehome them long as I tell him where they came from.
The emu and alpacas were amazing and sheep goats pet friendly. 4-H tours and schools alike go there.
Can you tell I am jazzed!!!????
I picked my lavendar orpington pullet from maybe 12 peeps offered at between 8-12 weeks old. Wonderful cause by then the difference between the roos and hens combs is just so obvious. Right now he has quite a number available but someone was also picking 6 hens this afternoon so I am sure that will change.
My friend took a turkey poult and a redish/golden polish which is likely a girl in my book. Gorgeous! we just controlled ourselves. eGad that was hard!

Oh My Mags, that sounds like heaven to me!!! I too am banning shipped chicks in my flock after my last experience and will absolutely go and check this farm out for future pullet needs. How you only came home with 1 is beyond me! Lol, I have put a limit of 6 in my flock on myself but we went to the Bronx Children's Zoo last week and everyone wanted to know what the cute black and white dotted bird was (Barred Rock) and could I get one too? Enablers, all!

Thank you for your positive sunshine, love reading it after a long day/weekend -
