Speckled Eggs...

I have a maran that throws some speckles occasionally. My quail are consistent with speckled eggs. Ha ha.

Wouldn't those be 'splotches' rather than 'speckles'? :D

Have had several birds lay speckled egg.
Light Brahma's had bloom speckles.
Welsummer and BCM(and their OE offspring) and some EE had pigment speckles.
Had a few birds that laid more like smears.

ICYDK PSA:
'Speckled' eggs can happen for several different reasons...very few, if any, of which are a 'problem'.

Can be caused by:
Excess or uneven pigment coating.
Excess or uneven cuticle(bloom).
Excess calcium deposits.
Porous eggs can appear speckled.
Some birds lay them consistently, some only once in awhile.
The pigment or bloom can change appearance when wet, then change back when dry again.

As long as bird is getting a good diet and is healthy in every other way, it is no cause for concern.

Great post.

Is there anything better? What breeds throw speckled eggs? Welsummers? I honestly don’t know which if my hens lays the darker speckled ones but I suspect its the green egger that doesn’t lay green. Anyway I love speckled eggs. Y'all post some up in reply if you’d like.

My Olive egger just started laying, her eggs had been solid coloured until she surprised me with this pretty little speckled egg
