Speckled Hen-Accurite

Oh good. I thought I'd be all alone.

I'm so glad.

Did you test your ww with the medical thermometer? You should do that to test the probe, it might be reading to high. 100.4 really isn't too bad, it's less than one degree high. I'm betting you thermometer reads a little high.

I hate to burst anyones bubble, and risk being a social outcast, but as a nurse I have to tell you.... those little medical thermometers are TOTAL JUNK. They couldn't register a temperature if their lives depended on it

. Soooo.... Guess I will stick with my two accurite, at least they totally agree, so I am fairly confident they are okay. Just need to know what the ranges are and dangers of going outside them.

A true mercury thermometer would be much more accurate than an alcohol thermometer, which I think most of them are now, if I'm not mistaken. I've found the AcuRite is pretty good, but they can vary from unit to unit. If yours agree they're probably pretty close. I believe the probe is more accurate than the actual unit measurement (top number). You're looking for an average within a range, not one number. You don't want it to skyrocket up to 104, but if you have between 99 and 100.4 and it goes back and forth within that range, you're okay. Ideally, the range is a bit tighter, but mine goes from 99.2-100 most often and I have good hatches. I keep my humidity most often between 40-50, but it can go down into the 30's for short periods and I don't sweat it too much. Again, a range of values is what you're looking for; better humidity a bit low than too high the first 18 days, especially.

Yeah, I know they are bad, that's why I used 2 different ones.

One my doctor gave me and said was more accurate. But hey, I have to put my faith somewhere, because I'm not getting anything better. There was only .7 off, so I'm not sweating it. I do think the probe is more accurate.

So when do your eggs go in?

Carrie,
Go get your water wiggle-willy thingy!

You guys are inspiring me to crawl in the attic to drag out the old incubator that is up there. This section is dangerous to be on, it's so tempting. I must have will power.

I definitely will try to hatch at some point in the future.

Let us know how your set up is going.

We have to take our son-in-law a belated Christmas gift..an afghan I made after hearing him say he wanted one Christmas day!! Took me four days but I got it done. ha ha On our way we will stop at Wal Mart. Where we live it is at least a half hour drive to the nearest Wal Mart.

NOw I am getting really anxious to try it.

When I tested my Accurite I used three different fever thermometers (I have kids so I have these everywhere). Two agreed with the Accurite, so I figured it was pretty good. I also like the min/max feature so I can tell the range that the incubator has been running in. Day 18, no pips or movement yet. Wating...................

mom's--keep us posted ok? We finally got back home and YES I FOUND WATER WIGGLERS!!!!!

I picked up three of them as they were .75 each. They were not what I thought they were going to be at all. ha ha Bator is set up now and plugged in for the dry run. I am going to go by the readings and see what happens.

Got my tubing today and the shelving stuff to put over the wire. I'll but that in when I take the eggs out of the turner. Everything is running perfectly. WW temp is 99.5

Just got to go put in the tubing and get those eggs. Maybe tomorrow.

Sounds great. Just remember, and I think I've said it before, but it bears repeating, that when you put the eggs in, even if they've come up to room temp, the bator will cool down temporarily till every egg has come up to the preset bator temp, so don't panic. This is for everybody, not just Deniece. It's tempting, if you have a manual adjust thermostat, to tweak it when you see the drop and then you're scrambling to readjust it again when the eggs start getting too warm.
