Speckled Sussex - good layers??

SS are definitely people person, very friendly I got 2, also snagged 3 welsumer last spring and their feisty friendly(you have to give em attentions or they’ll peck your pant legs or shoes) Now I have 2 batches of Australorps (got suckered in by good layer reputations) some are friendly some are not and their feathers a little fluffy and slightly messy look.

My buff is gorgeous but doesn’t want to get near me at all and she’s a year old, got 3 batches of EEs hoping for blue eggs, I got mint, olive, green & pastel blue and pink eggs from them, I feel like Christmas Day whenever I gather their eggs like my Marans.

I love hearing about the different breeds!! I would love to have all those colors! Are the welsummer eggs about as dark as the marans?

Nope, they’re more like terra cotta- dark but not as dark, some are specled reddish brown, let me see if I have photos from today’s eggs. The one on top of the photo and the one on the far right are welsumer’ eggs, Marans beside it.

Life with chicks, If it were me, I would get more Specked Sussex. They are by far and away - the most people oriented chickens I ever had. My Australorps are my very best layers, not "people" chickens but are very gentle with their flock mates and make a wonderful addition. My Welsummers are not "follow me around" kind of gals (like my Speckled Sussex) but are hearty and strong and they are also very gentle with flock mates. They are not a lap chicken but not "run like the devil is chasing me" when I reach down and pick one up either. Kind of middle of the road. I like them alot too. If you want a PET chicken with the added bonus of lots of eggs (even in the coldest winter months) go with the Speckled Sussex. My Speckled Sussex, Noodles, will follow me back to the house, into the garage, up the steps and into the house!!! No joke. I let her walk in with me once to see what she would do and she just marched in like she owned the place. Like it was totaly normal to go in with me. :love She constantly chatters away to me and hangs right next to me when I am working outside. She tells me all about her day. If I don't answer her back I get a peck on the knee cap! I just love her. LOL! I have chicken fever really bad!:celebrate

I'd take SS over an Autralorp any day. The BA's I used to have were mean-tempered, with other chickens and me. Plus one of them was a non-stop broody.

My Welsummer is almost as personable as the SS I used to have, she's the friendliest of the birds I now have, but not a lap chicken.

Good to know, thinking of taking austrolorp off the list and sticking to SS and Wellsummer plus an EE for egg color.

Maybe my BA's were out of the ordinary, most people seem to love them. They didn't work out for me at all though so thought I'd mention them.

You won't go wrong with SS, Wellies, and EE...I love all 3 of them! And you'd have a beautiful egg basket.
