Speckled Sussex - Hen or Roo

Three Roos that I'm pretty certain are Roos. They show their hackles to one another when they're free ranging.

"Hen #2" I was convinced this one was a hen until it started growing some tail feathers in. The comb is starting to grow as well.

Those three are definitely male. Showing hackles doesn't mean much - pullets do it too. The reason I say male is because no pullet will get comb and wattles that size and color unless they're at POL.

This one could be a pullet.

"Hen #1" the smallest of the group. Better pic of it.

Pullet.

Pullet.

Thank you for the help! In an ideal world, hopefully those two end up being pullets and I can at least get a trio. Would certainly help with starting a flock of these out here. Worst case is I get only one pullet and I do my best to keep her and one Roo happy together until she starts laying. Then I can start a few batches of eggs in the incubator and slowly increase the flock. Eventually I would do my best to swap out the Roo so that I can introduce unrelated genetics into the flock. =)

I also have a batch of Light Sussex chicks coming at the end of the month that I'll be eventually replacing the ISA Browns with. If I were to use a Speckled Sussex Roo x Light Sussex hens, would this produce sex-link chicks? Reason for doing this is everyone here orders their chicks from large commercial operations and always want just hens. If I could produce sex-link offspring here it would help to keep things local. Thoughts?

Sounds like a great plan to me! :thumbsup

Yes, that should be a sex link cross. I'm not sure how visible the differences would be with those two breeds, but you should get red females and silver males.
