Speckled Sussex not speckled

I see speckling by her ears! She is pretty!

Because she is a brown susex.

I have a speckled Sussex chicken who is not speckled. As a chick she had white tips on her feathers, but that went away when she got her adult feathering except for a tiny bit of white on the feathers around her ears. She’s laying fine, and is otherwise healthy. Will she get speckles when she molts? This pic was taken before she started laying, but it’s the most recent one I have of her. Her eggs are the two on the top right.

It honestly doesn't remind me of a sussex.

They come from Privett Hatchery. According to Google, they’re based in NM.

How old is she? I had one from Privett that was never very speckley even after several molts. Guess that makes them just Sussex? She was still a great hen though!

I got her last May, so a bit shy of a year old. My cousin got a SS from the same feed store (therefore same hatchery) a few months after me, and that girl is gorgeously speckled already. Oh well, I think she’s pretty even without the speckles and she lays well, which is the more important thing. She has an odd habit of laying her eggs on the floor of the run if I go out to check for eggs before she’s laid for the day, so I have to restrain myself from checking for eggs before 2-3 pm. Apparently the nesting box isn’t ‘safe’ enough so she has to lay her egg right out in the open where it gets stepped on.
