Speckled Sussex?

Pics
Ok, here is a picture of my girl laying. I am pretty sure the egg above was from my NH! She was ready too, but I can now see the difference in their eggs. The SS eggs are smaller right now, and they have a pink tint to them..is that what they normally have. Here she is sitting..so pretty while she sits.

She's very talkative, is this something you guys find with yours? Very sweet face. :)

She decided to turn and show me her best side. :p

Nice pictures, Cynthia, and what a pretty girl you have! Mine always laid eggs with a pinkish or peachy tint, and they were always on the smaller size. My two girls I had were also very talkative; something I loved about them. I've got 2 juvies right now, and so far haven't noticed them 'talking' but maybe that will develop with age.

I'm hearing that a lot about them being on the smaller size. I was worried at first, because she was pretty small, but she has filled out more, but still, on the small size compared to some of my other hens. Thanks for the compliment. :))

Ok, going to post this here, and on the other SS thread..I'm confused. LOL...I went to take a picture of what I thought I knew it was going to look like. Thought one that I got out of the nest yesterday was hers, and another one the other day..well, maybe not, because I know for sure this is her egg, there were no other eggs after she left the nest. I just may have seen her lay her first egg. She did squat for me for the first time 2 days ago. Hmmm?? Is this the color of their eggs, or do they lay more of a red brown color, like I will show here in comparison?

When I saw this, I literally said, what? Right out loud. lol...

Quite a difference in color! Hers on the left..the other may be my NH. She just started laying too, but the last one was really big..maybe she's going to start laying larger, which is fine by me. There is a pink hue to the SS egg. No brown at all, beige pink.

Hi Cynthia,

Very pretty pale pink egg! I love the speckles, very friendly girls. Finallly found a good rooster and a few particularly good hens came with him. THey are in quarentine and I'm looking forward to incubating a few eggs, especially as the summer heat has hit , its too hot to ship eggs.

Where is the other thread, I need to do some more reading!

Hi!

I'm hoping it isn't too hot, I just ordered some eggs from Florida..set them last night, then I won some eggs again~! Yep, photo contest in the Father's Day Hatch A Long. She is waiting for the weather on her end to send me the Olive Egger eggs that she is sending..they are the real olive color, hope they will be ok.
The other site, not busy either, but has some recent posts. Here is the link.https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/429217/show-quality-speckled-sussex/1140#post_9277953
No one has answered my questions yet on that one either. Wondering if the egg color of the SS is a light color versus the dark. I'm thinking yes, and that she must have laid her first egg yesterday. There's such a big difference in the two egg colors. I thought she was laying all this time. Oh well, I will know now. Glad you found a nice little flock to breed. No fair! Wish I could have roosters! These birds are so friendly, and, talkative! lol..always talks when I come around, at least mine is. Love her colors.
Oh, how long do you quarantine?

My girls in quarantine lay a very light egg. When the boys found it they ran it over to me to see. I know it is SS because, they are the only ones in the quarantine area!! LOL A nice pale egg. Of course I love ALL eggs! I love the OE too, nice shades of greens. Mixing blues with like a pale SS color might be a paler green than when using a little darker brown like RIR. And of course the OE when using a marans, the darkest olives from the darkest marans. So fun!

Quarantine. I keep birds in isolation for 6 weeks. Still no guarantee. They may be carriers and no longer show symptoms. Then when mixed into the flock, voila! Birds get sick. I haven't had it happen yet. I'm just super careful about buying.

THe SS rooster is bigger than any boy I have. Bigger than my BO and my FBCM.

Yep. Looks like a typical SS egg to me. Congratulations!!

Our ss lay between about 4 and 6 a week. They took take broody time and moult time during the year. I've never done a chart of their "days off" for moult and broody. That sounds like a nice 2013 project

I have not had a broody SS yet. I've got SS from two different hatcheries that are over two years old and have never gone broody. I have SS (that are about 13 months old) from two different breeders and have not gone broody yet. I've got SS from a BYC person (these are about 7 months old ) and have not gone broody either. For comparison sake, I have an ameracauna that is 11 months old and she has gone broody TWICE already. She hatched and raised the first set of chicks, went back to the flock, and is setting on the second set of eggs right now. They are due to hatch this week.

My girls are 18 months old now. I have 3 girls broody out of 11 girls. I let one girl hatch a clutch of eggs. She was real protective over her chick.
I am changing my answer to YES they will do the broody thing, but not until they are well into their 2nd year.
