Speckledhen's Ivy-stuffed with grapes and smiling!

I believe that some animals are put on the Earth for the sole purpose of teaching us love, compassion, empathy, and appreciation for all living things. Look how many people Ivy and her sisters have touched without ever having met, held, or touched them.

I know...when I saw her when I first walked in, she was standing and dozing and she looked so so weak. But when I walked over and spoke to her, she looked up and perked up. She was so sweet and really seems to enjoy being talked to and gently stroked. she let me rub her face and anywhere I wanted and she even talked to me several times over the weekend. But when Cyn commented to Ivy that she was not eating or drinking much, I said "Does she like grapes?" I was surprised when Cyn said she had never had grapes that she could recall. So, I had brought a huge bag of white seedless grapes that I munched on while I was driving down to Cyn's and I bit a piece off and offered it to Ivy. She gently took it from me and got a taste and perked up like a youngin wanting more. She was bobbing side to side looking in my hand to see if there was more...so, I gave her more...all she wanted. so, the habit began...I would give her a few grapes nearly everytime I went past her and she was not sleeping. It was like a different chicken when she saw you had a grape for her. I was so amazed and so happy.

I baked biscuits for her and forgot them so I called Waffle House on my cell phone and ordered a dozen biscuits to go and went and got them on my way to Cyn's. Ivy had a little but after she had the grapes, biscuits were her second choice. LOL

I wish there was a way for Ivy to get better but I really do not think she can fight it off this time around but my gosh that girl is strong willed and strong spirited. I think when she passes there will be many a tear shed for her here on BYC and especially by those who have been honored with the opportunity to meet her, talk to her and interact with her....she really is special.

Ya know, I think part of what has made Ivy so very special is the lady who raised her, and let the rest of us in on that little miracle living out in her coop. Cyn, thank you so much for making us a part of Ivy's life. And yes Cetawin, there will be more than a few tears shed around BYC here when Ivy does decide that she has had enough.

And I think it will truly be a time of Ivy's choosing. I think she has made it abundantly clear that she will meet the Grim Reaper on her terms and hers alone! Not until SHE is ready will she let him take her down.

No ifs, ands or buts about it, that girl has a fire in her that is not easily extinguished! One look in those precious eyes can tell even a dimwitted person that much!! Such a beautiful girl. She's a one of a kind, and there will never be another like her anywhere. Nope! Never another one exactly like Ivy.

Thankfully, the Great Spirit in his/her infinite wisdom, saw fit to give us other creatures and other people who are equally wonderful and unique in their own way. The wealthiest man on earth is truly poorer than a pauper if he doesn't understand that much about life!

Thank you again Cyn, for letting us share in the delightful miracle that is Ivy. That goes for Livvie, Miss Tiny, Suede, Zane, Dutch, Gypsy, Shadow and all of the other wonderful little souls that share your home.

Serrin, you are such a sweet soul yourself! You have such a way with words. I know many think of chickens as livestock and only that. They never get to know one. The personalities are unique and special. If I distanced myself more, I'd never see the second in succession for the top spot in the flock standing vigil over a dying head hen as I have seen twice already. The dignity of that time is so touching and very unexpected. It's been said that they don't feel affection for us, that they see us as walking food dispensers. That is only a tiny part of why they flock to us as Gypsy and others have taught me. She knows I don't have food when she begs to be picked up. She only wants to be with me , to spend time with me and be close to me. That is something else we didn't anticipate when we started with our flock. They know their names, they really do, as much as any dog does. They are amazing and unexpectedly dignified and intelligent and if I hadn't been so close to them or observed them so closely on a daily basis, I'd probably think they were the dumbest creatures on earth, as some do. I'm blessed to have this experience with these special little creatures, the glimpse into their tiny world, and I wish that for others.
