Speckledhen's Ten Commandments of Good Flock Management

Pics
I am so happy that I have found BYC. I bought some acreage recently. Haven't even got a home on it yet! This thread is a great help to me as I wanted to learn as much as possible before I break ground on the chicken project. I'm very excited and can't wait to get started, but I have to move in first! I thank you all in advance for helping me to prevent potential problems before I even get my first chicken. (and I'm sure that my future flock will be happier and healthier as a result).

Thank you Cyn for the time and effort you took to bring us this information!

That is a well thought out top ten. I grew up with horses and our rule was 'horses before self' feed them, then YOU get to eat, or just look to their care first, because they can't do it themselves.
Thanks!!

Thank you all who have commented on this topic as I am new to much of this I now am armed with great info, and realize there is more to chickens then being cute and laying eggs. I have much to learn. My only concern should I ever needed to cull what would be the most humane. I love all my pets and am not sure my vet would even know how to put a chicken to sleep or cull. again read, read, read Thanks so much!

I *heart* the 10 Commandments!! I don't have any...yet! I am trying to get as much knowledge and information as possible BEFORE I get them. I also *loved* the idea of giving this out to people who buy the chickens!

Thank you!

What a great list.

I live in France and having bought chickens from quite a few different breeders in the area and I can tell you they were not up the standards of this list. It's a shame to see, it really is. When it's actually so simple and easy to keep to it. Of course I wouldn't put all the breeders here in one boat as they are not all as bad as that!!!

Thank you.
