Spirit - the amazing grey dewlap toulouse gander!

What I would give for your weather, Lydia!!! My thermometer is reading -13F right now. Every single dewlap is curled up tight with their beaks tucked in their wings. BRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!

I had to chase mine out of the barn this morning. Usually I open the door, and out they go. I wondered if something had been at the door last night, and they were afraid, or if they just thought their day in the snow yesterday was not nearly so comfy as their nights in the straw in the barn.

Hope your feeling alot better today Marty, a good shot of whiskey with honey and lemon warmed will do ya a world of good. or white lightening what ever you can find. I've never ttried it but the O timers around here swear by it. It was 37 this morning when i got up, now it's going down hill. They said it was going below freezing so I drug the 150' of hose down the drive way so it would drain and not freeze, just to have to go out this morning and drag it back up so the geese and ducks could have so swim time, boy that thing is a hoss.
Poor Lydia, maybe you should got one of the role up rheels for hole that drains it while it winds. You can then just roll the whole 'hoss into the garage for easy snow free access. Me? I'm hauling buckets of water.

Iain, the quote is an old sarcastic saying. Maybe I should go proofread it.

Oh.... the quote makes sense now! I'm hauling buckets here, too. Yesterday, my outside house faucets were frozen and I had to fill the buckets inside kitchen and haul outside to them. We are 10 to 15 degrees below normal here and I hate it! I open my coop door around 10am for the ducks and they are usually happy to leave for food/water area, but they only want to be outside for a few hours then will go back into their coop on their own to wait for afternoon food/water to be delivered to them inside.

Ohmy, We are -15 right now and the ducks like to fly right by me to get outside. The geese go in for a little while and the ducks spend the day outside. The chickens on the other hand come out of there coop but will not step one foot outside the barn.

I have a water spiget in the barn, its like and old pump handle with a tape heater taped to it. I still have to carry buckets all though not very far.

I know the feeling of carring buckets of water in this cold weather. But I can only handle a I think it is a 2 gallon bucket. because of my really bad back. I have broke my back 3 different times and have a pinched nerve saiaticia and curvature of the spine. Boy does it not help at all carring them buckets. I do wear a back brace but it does not help much at all. So I do not like it when it is under 48 degrees the hose freezes up.

The hose is soooooo much easier.

we spend the time to empty the hose and take them apart everytime.... then lay them so they drain and walk the water out ( lift up one end and then walking down the hose making sure it's draining) bit of a pain but beats carring water all that way. Takes about 18gal to fill everyone.
