Spirit - the amazing grey dewlap toulouse gander!

Yes, pronounced like Must without a T. Its mus musculous, or the house mouse, but its not a true mouse at all. They can be friendlied up and made into pets even, and this was very commen 300 years ago, folks let them live in their hair, and fed them. They also helped spread the plague throughout Europe. They rather dropped in popularity as pets then, for obvious reasons. They aren't as clever or swift as a mouse, so cats catch them easier. A real mouse (mice) can jump several feet up or down, fly by you like greased lightening, and have a variety of shades, plus pale underbellies. A mus in pretty much a uniform grayish color (light gray to almost black, but all over and under).

I'm a vast encyclpedia of useless infromation. Ask me anything, LOL.

okay so now i will be looking at length of tails to determine what the heck those lil things are i see once in a while. lolThey also make holes under the wild bird feeders, well something does.

Interesting information. I'm not sure what a mus is, but there is no mistaking a vole when you come across one. Like Marty said, they are nasty little buggers and will not hesitate to attack you if they feel threatened. But they are no match for our feisty cats. We are overrun with voles in Utah but I rarely see them (alive) on my property.

Hey Marty,
Could you find a picture of a Vole and a Mus for me? I have caught many that have the short tails but are not moles but don't really look like mice either. That would help me out alot to determine what I am catching here in my barn.

Last night the geese were on the straw beeded patch I layed down for them but two of them were not aloud to join the rest so I made another patch and this morning all 7 were hunkered down in the straw. All the fighting has stopped but two have not been ablw to join the others. They hiss at them even George has started to hiss, but the bitting and grabbing of the wings has stopped for now. Thank GOD, I ways affraid of getting broken wings. The one I thought did have a broken wing was flapping it around tis morning so it must be much better.:weee

I looked on google at voles/mice and I don't think what I.ve been seeing is a vole, the ones I see have a more pointed face and they have long tails too, so maybe they are mice hiding in the ground and come out to snatch a bit of food once in a while. ugly lil things what ever they are. I have actually seen some cute mice before and also wood rats are kinda cool looking,

Triplell, glad to hear things are settling down with your geese. :)

Hey Marty, how are the holidays treating you?

Lovely direction our chat has taken.... but I guess who wouldn't want to talk about snakes and rodents during Christmastime?

Moles are the size of small rats, but short stub tails, and a rounder nose. They don't use their eyes much, as they are underground dwellers.

Hi Iain, I'm doing OK, thanks! How are you and all your cute goosies? As a science, getting to discuss biology is a real treat!
