Spirit - the amazing grey dewlap toulouse gander!

Hey Patty. The foot continues to heal pretty well, but Spirit's mobility plateaued after the 1st. I've been so swamped with work the past few days that I have not been able to tend to him as much as usual, and he appeared to decline a little today. So, I put him in the tub about 5 hours ago and he's been happy as a clam ever since. He doesn't even care if I'm in bathroom with him, so long as I visit him every 30 minutes or so (and feed him).

I hope having some R&R in the tub will help him. Does Scott seem to know what could be going on? Thanks for update.

Spirit must have been a very content goose! Great! Dear little feller.

Spirit wound up spending 5.5 hours in the tub before he decided he was done. He looks better and has been doing ok getting around his room since, but I'm sure he will be ready to go back into his kennel before too long to rest.

Scott is unsure if the bone scraping is causing longer recovery time or if the hole needs to be scraped out a 2nd time. The hole has completely filled in at this point. Most has scabbed and is starting to come off and reveal nice fresh skin. The central point in hole has fresh granulation at surface which still bleeds if pulling gauze off dry. He also finally shed the scabbing from the frostbite 2 days ago and it pulled out his outer toenail and left a raw mark which may also be bothering him.

Scott is out of the country until the end of the month. I can take him to Scott's clinic to see the other dvm that has worked on Spirit, but I'd rather hold out until Scott returns, if I am able.

Sure hope that Spirit gets back more on his feet. 5.5 hours my my if we did that we would look like big prunes!

But if he enjoyed it that much good therapy for Spirit. I hope the foot is healing inside and not starting to get infected again...

Just out of interest, or not....years ago one of my greyhounds had a large patch of skin pulled off him by another dog biting him. About the size of the bottom of a mug. Poor dog. Well, greyhounds don´t have any extra skin to stitch together like a lab would, for instance.
So, short story is it took 9 months and 8 lots of surgery to get it right again....little by little the vet stretched the skin over the flesh. Sometimes the skin couldn´t hold the stitches and we wondered if he´d ever be ok. The last little inch wouldn´t heal. The vet did the last surgery on him. Scraped out the area under the skin where it wasn´t closing, to freshen up the flesh

didn´t stitch it, but covered it with a damp (aloe vera) pad to keep the flesh moist...in no time it closed, and later you could hardly see the scar. It was amazing, but it took a lot of time, money, thinking and experimental (one time he sewed buttons on him) surgery to get there.

Poor little soul, though, losing his nail. But if the wound still bleeds, then that´s a good sign, eh? It´ll heal, you´re doing such a lot for him.

I agree Janet, your taking such good care of him. He is very blessed to have you. and I'm sure you feel the same way about Spirit. What about soaking his foot in Epsom salt water? I have done this with a couple of mine but I do put both feet into the dish pan works better that way but warm ES soaks might help him feel better too. Cheering you and Spirit on.
