Spitzhaubens

Update on the 3/4 Spitz chick. It is now 2 weeks old, and getting a little crest lump. It can fly up to perches 2' off the ground. I named it Tuffy. I really hope it's a pullet....Mom looks all rumpled because she's in the middle of preening....

Anyway, if a pullet, she can be crossed w the bantam EE rooster. Crests are a dominant trait, and I read that beards are also dominant. And they say that blue eggs are dominant. So if all that is correct, I hope to have bearded crested chickens that lay blue eggs...
That chick looks like a little songbird!

Update on the 3/4 Spitz chick...at almost 5 weeks, it looks like it's a male. 😖. It definitely has pink in the comb, I would assume a pullet would have no comb or color. The half-Spitz (Sprite) boys had red combs by 3 weeks tho. They were also rowdy and hyper. At least this guy is shy and gentle like the Spitzhaubens I've raised.
His Spitzhauben father was also a singleton chick and was/is always polite to me. He was raised in the flock and took over when his father was killed by a raccoon. There was never an issue between father and son.
The chick has a back sweeping crest like the Sprites, but is rather spangled. All the Sprites are laced like their Sebright mother.
He's weaned now. I don't know what I'm going to do with him. The little bantam EE flock accepts him as one of their own, including the rooster who has always been protective of him. We'll see how it goes.... IMG_7809.jpeg

I hatched 2 Spitz eggs... pure Spitz. Only males are spitz... only white egg layers are Spitz...

And I got, one muddy golden spangled. Might look better with adult feathers.
With no pink yet, at 6 weeks old, I will say probably a girl. You can see her tiny little horns. (She is surrounded by chicks I ordered from a hatchery)

And then... THIS came out of the other Spitz egg. (The white chick next to him is a Hatchery chick)

Note that comb!!!

I'm thinking something is not right here...

Whether a pullet is gold vs. silver is determined by what she inherits from her father (but not her mother.) It is possible for a rooster to show silver and carry gold, so some of his daughters can be gold.

A silver hen should always produce sons that show silver, no matter whether the father is silver or gold. So if you are sure the mother is silver, then a gold male chick is a big mystery. Maybe there is something that makes the mother look silver but really be gold. I don't think the Cream gene can quite do that, but maybe that in combination with something else?

Or maybe double-check whether any other chickens in the flock could be the mother. You mentioned white eggs, but a hen that normally lays brown can sometimes lay white (if the brown gets skipped that day), so maybe that is what happened?

The only surprise is the comb.

The color is not a surprise.

I have both Chamois and golden spangled Spitz. I do not have any silver spangled.

All of my Spitz have Spitz combs.... so... that wild comb that wants to be a buttercup comb???? Funny!

Oh, okay, that makes a lot more sense. For some reason I thought you had only Silver Spangled ones.

I don't know where the comb came from, but it is interesting to see.

I have three pullets that I kept. My absolute favorite is my gold spangled chick. Her spangles are coming in beautifully. Her back surprisingly has good new spangles coming in despite the older feathers looking poorly spangled. She is also such the sweetheart and she loves sitting in my lap.
She moves so much so it’s super hard to get a good photo of her!

I have a few photos of my other chamois pullets I kept. They aren’t full spangles but I know chamois has that issue. Their nares aren’t as cavernous either but I don’t plan on breeding them, I just wanted some pretty and friendly birds, haha!

I also didn’t expect this breed to be as friendly as they are. One of my chamois spangled always wants to sit on my shoulder and will jump from the ground to it. They are so friendly and just absolute characters!

Yes! Great personalities!!!

Yours are beautiful!

DS entered his 2 Spitzhaubens in the county fair. They got blue (but of course couldn’t go further since the breed is not APA yet).

As usual so many visitors stopped to admire their beauty and ask what kind of chicken. Technically neither hen is spectacular when compared to other Spitzhaubens. However these girls make up for it in personality.

“Poot” must be in physical contact with my son whenever he’s outside. She runs at his heels and follows him like a well trained dog. The moment he sits down, there’s a Spitz in his lap. At the fair she cried to come out whenever he was in sight. Instant happy cuddle hen! “Sprinkles” is more typical. Hates confinement and loves to explore. Very friendly, comes when called, but doesn’t have time to snuggle all day.

The kids also had a costume contest for fun. DS’s last minute “chicken sandwich” costume was a big hit.
